    Head unit and iPod compatibility

    Hi all
I have a 2007 b6 Passat with a head unit model RNS2. I have an iPod 30 pin cable installed and it works with iPod and iPod touch, however, it doesn't charge the iPod, the last iPod I use and it did charge was iPod classic gen2. But since my iPod got stolen and I can't find any iPod classic gen2 anywhere inc eBay. What can I do, can I install any alternative, interface cable. The head unit has a sat Nav the same photo in this thread, the first one.

    Upgrading to rns510

Just so we know exactly which iPod model you are talking about, can you Identify your iPod model on this Apple website.

Once upon a time Apple changed the way iPods charged from Firewire to USB, some I think allowed both ways of charging, but this meant that some older ipods on newer equipment (or older equipment on newer ipods) didn't charge but did do playback. There used to be a little male/female adaptor plug that passed the power through to get it working but I haven't seen one in forever.

Why will my older iPod charge on my iPod-compatible stereo system but my new iPod not charge? Is there a way around this problem? @ EveryiPod.com

I'm not saying this is your problem, but it sounds like it could be.

What head unit is in the car? Stock?

If it's the first one, then it's a RNS2. The RNS510 is the second one.

That iPod model post-dates your head unit, so if it worked for that one, then I can't see why it wouldn't work for other later models, such as early iPod touches with the 30-pin connector. Be that as it may, a simple eBay search brought up 77 A1238 iPods for you to buy.

That's what I've been doing, searching for the iPod classic that's compatible, however, look is one thing finding one is another. It's seems that's people intend to keep them and not willing to sell even if it's that old. Would you have an iPod Classic you want to get read off by chance @arcadelt

That's why I asked which model you were talking about. Is that the A1238 that you mentioned above, because that is what I found on eBay? It looks like you could buy this one now near Wollongong for $150.

Actually I do, but I'm not going to give them away. I have two mint condition 160GB classics, one black and one silver, and a mint condition 80GB iPod video.

The Hawk's reply with links helps a lot. Most iPod classic will charge. I'm in the hunt for iPod classic now.
You sure you don't want to sell it or do you know anyone. I don't care if it's only 30G. @arcadelt
