Got told Ipod adaptor wont charge ipod!!

    Hi

    I have a polo GTI 2007

This morning I took it in for some warranty work.

I've always wanted to have at least an aux input into stereo so I could plug my MP3 player in. I know they are around but not in Australia and I would have to find someone to fit it.

Anyhoo I'm planning on buying an iphone so I just asked if they could fir the ipod adaptor in for me which they will but they reckon it will only work to play songs and will not actually charge the ipod at all!!

I've googled and found a volkswagen original accessories website and its got the ipod adaptor listed there and it even says there it does charge the unit..

Does anyone know if they brough out different models ones which do and dont charge? It would be annoying if if didnt charge the iphone as I would have to unplug it to charge it and then cant listen to music

Also is there anyway I can get some sort of convertor plug which allows normal aux input 3.5mm so I cna plug any device in and play music?

    Thanks

The newest generation iPods and iPhones charge differently. What do you have? Even if you have a new one though you can get little adapters that mean that an old adapter will charge a new device. Cablejive sell them. As they are a little bulky I bought an extension cable from them too, put the adapter in the middle and plug the ext. cable into the iPhone / iPod.

Don't think you can plug a 3.5 into the ipod adapter, could be wrong though...

Thanks actually, I don't have an ipod yet I was going to buy the iphone and use that but now that I found out it wont charge I was thinking of just buying the cheapest 8gb nano and using that only since it can play for up to 24 hours before needing recharge..

However I might check out that convertor thing you speak of thouhg.. Thanks!

Just out of curiosity, which gen versions of ipod nanos will charge with the vw adaptor and also be compatible.

I say this because since I dont own an ipod yet, I might just find a second hand one on ebay.

    Cheers!

    EDIT:

Sorry thanks for your help but I ended up cancelling the adaptor.. they rang back and quoted me $395!!! I think that's a bit steep for a cable..

I have heard there are aftermarket cables you can get which connects to the CD Changer port and terminates to a 3.5mm plug.. I am going to try find one of those instead

If I cant find it maybe when I get my iphone and one of those charge convertors I will look into it again

    I *think* it's just 4th gen nano, 2nd gen touch, and iphone 3G / 3GS, but I'm not 100% on that.

You can get aftermarket iPod adapters for VW that are a fraction of that price and fit it yourself. E.g. www.xcarlink.com.au They have 2 models for VW, not sure which one you'd need, you'd have to ask him, but they are only $80.

The only drawback of those xcarlink adaptors is that you can't control your ipod from your ipod interface. You only have limited access by using the controls in the Head unit to play playlists. ie. you can't search by artist, album, song, etc.

Xcarlink look a bit sketchy as well. Read the below thread. I wouldn't hand over money to someone that has not had contact details available for that long.

I had an Xcarlink in my Mazda - no problems with them at all.

And you CAN control from the iPod by setting the CD changer to CD1, which passes control back to the iPod. The other "CD"s play playlists.

There are others out there too.
