Getting the most from the OEM speakers? Two 6.5-8in subs in rear quarters?

Mt three door Polo GTI has the 6.5in speakers front and rear on the plastic stand-offs. I've just dynamat'd the car and was on the way to splurging on an amp and speakers when I figured I'd have decent crack at trying to tune up the car a little first, and I'm glad I did. My cheapo Jvc head unit and powered fusion sub actually came up alright.

Im wondering if any one here has any experience amping the standard Philips speakers?

Has anyone tried stuffing small subs in the rear panels in place of the 6.5 components? The car is the size of a Chinese takeaway container, probably doesn't need four 6.5s, and I wouldn't mind reclaiming the boot and ditching the big sub.

You will get a great improvement from amplifying the standard speakers. I've got a '14 GTI with an amp onto the standard speakers and it improves them out of sight.

Sub is still a necessity though. Have you thought about picking up a slimline sub and building a box that fits the contour of the boot and makes a large false floor? Doesn't have to be deep if its big.

HPF the signal to the speakers so only the sub handles frequencies below 100Hz. People will not believe the output and quality from the stock speakers in this configuration (basically you run it like a sub/sat HT system).

My headunit does this but you can use an amp that has an HPF too

Wire up the sub so it's easily removable for the 5% of the time the whole boot is needed and enjoy the full sound the rest of the time.
I doubt you can get near the quality and output from woofers that will fit + the cavity won't be large enough vs a 10" sealed sub (ported is stupid for a small car like a Polo).

Good advice on the amp, cheers. If I hadn't just spent a fortune on shocks I'd be buying one.

This is exactly what I have now. Agreed on HPF tuning. And boot space. Three connectors and the sub is out.
