this is 2015 map, sorry not 2016.

even though it says 2014 on the site, they replied to me that they have latest 2015 map for same price. Dealer confirmed that 2015 is latest they have and they can install it for $50 [no disc]

Can you be more specific about the functionality and problem with different carriers? Is there a service difference with the carriers?

Thank you. I will check the site. Problem is likely to be in frequencies carries run at. Spark runs at 850MHZ and 2100 MHz. Voda runs at 900 MHz and 2100 MHz. so i assume that 2009 VW phone only supported 900MHZ. so the quesion is it hardware or software limitations.... i will try to find out from dealer or VW NZ again, but they don't seem to know much.

Yes legal from genuine VW dealer?! i am shocked it is not free maps update for 10 years or something...

It isnt legal at all No matter who has the disc it is only supposed to be installed in one vehicle and you should get the disk, especially if you pay for it.

Some salesmen will do it for you and I had it done once when a new map came out shortly after I bought the car. I was told by the guy not to let the boss see me doing it. No different to you buying one and copying it for all your mates or giving them yours to use.

Interesting. That licensing agreement also means that you shouldn't be able to sell your disc without first removing the update from your head unit. Is it even possible to reinstall the older version that originally came with your car (presuming you even got it in the first place) over the top of a newer version?

Technically you are correct.

It is the same as with music You may legally copy a DVD for your own use as long as you have the original. See here

In fact you cannot reinstall a map over itself I tried when people were having problems with streets not showing up in V6. I found I had to install V5 over it and then reinstall V6 over that.

A dealer who is charging $50 to install HIS map on your unit is simply ripping you off if he doesnt give you the disk as well.

He could make $500 out of that disk in a very short time and Im sure VW would dissaprove big time.


They have fixed it in other makes as the map version in a Mazda is linked to the car and you cant copy the SD card or put it in another car as it wont run without the card.
I think the Touareg is similar.

I found out about the Mazda the hard way when a friend asked me to register and update his SD card and me like a fool formatted it first.

Big mistake cost me $245 for a new one
