It appears that you have a faulty mainboard.
There is a guy in the UK who can fix them:

Thanks for the info. Do you have any details at all.
I played about with it this eve and it tried installing it again, it got further and then threw up an error about software conflict.
So there is a part when you install the firmware it tells you to downgrade, i think i may of missed this which maybe causing the conflict, do you know if there is anyway around this? Or do i try installing a older version than 5238? Sorry for all the headache.
When you get the error about software downgrade, it will prompt you to reboot the unit by holding down three buttons.
It will reboot and allow you to install the same or an older version.

So once reboot appears on screen hold down SETUP + EJECT+MIC - do i leave the firmware disc in and then try doing a reinstall or remove disc first?
It will eject the disk. Put it back in.

Hi guys,
Greetings from Portugal!
First, many thanks for keeping all this stuff up do date, just awesome.
I have this question:
I have a VW Passat from 10/05 with a RNS 510 (5P0 035 680 A it came from a Seat Leon, HW:04, SW: 0996 - No SD Card slot), and i've never had problems with the CAN gateway, no battery drain!
Actually, i would like to update my unit to this version - RNS Firmware » Firmware 4020 for older units in Europe with HDD ratios 60/35/5 so that i can be able to install the latest West Europe Maps.
Does my unit supports that 4020 version?
Is that version the far as i can go with my headunit?
Will this version cause me battery drain?
Can i go directly from 0996 to this 4020 version?
Thanks in advance, guys!

Kamold you are a legend, after three attempts i finally got it to load back on and then install the maps too, thanks once again.
Yes you can upgrade your unit.
5238 is the latest available.
You can upgrade directly from any version.
If you have an old canbus gateway (below rev E) you need to do one of the following:
1. Upgrade the CANbus gatweway software using ODIS
2. Upgrade the Canbus gateway module itself (very easy to do and plenty available on Ebay)
3. Install 4020 (instead of 523 for older units as you have linked. This version has tables swapped in the firmware CD to prevent battery drain.

Thank you for the answer! O will upgrade the unit to the 5238 version when i have the gateway updated. Until then, i will stick to your customized versions! So, you are telling me that i can update my 5p0 035 680 A HW:04 from a Seat Leon, to your 4020 version, right?
And what about updating to the other one you have, the 4120? Does it works in my HU?
Also has the tables swapped to prevent the battery drain?
Regarding my 5P0 035 680 A, is it worth it to reach the 5238 version?
Will i experience major diferences?
Can you provide me the link to download the 5238 FW?
Sorry for the long post and all these questions, but here in Portugal all they can say is "you can't" "impossible"...
Thanks!
