    firmware update for Bolero's

Quick question - does anyone know if there is a firmware update for the bolero stereo unit?? I connected up a new portable hard drive through the MDI connection and the Bolero doesn't recognise it, and read that the Bolero's only read FAT16 or FAT32 file systems, where as the portable HDD is NTFS file system. I dont want to have to go backwards and reformat my HDD to FAT32, or have to go out and buy a Ipod just to carry all my music onboard the RS.
    Any ideas??

Your service advisor will be able to tell you whether there are any updates available for the Bolero in your car but I'm betting the answer is no. There appears to have been a firmware update for the Boleros but it only applies to units manufactured with that update and is not able to be installed on older models for whatever reason.
You can buy a new 1TB 2.5" hard drive these days for less than what it would cost you in Australia for an MDI to iPod cable so that would be the way to go imo. If you are only using the drive to store music files there is no practical difference whether you use FAT32 or NTFS as far as playing the music is concerned.

As far as I know, NTFS is read pretty much by computers, all USB keys, and flash portable storage has to be FAT32, always has been that way and I doubt anything would read NTFS. Macs don't even read it properly, but FAT 32 no issues.

Can't you use an SD card? My Bolero accepts a 32 GIG card, I can't see me needing more than two. There was a firmware change somewhere around early 09 which allowed the unit to read an SD card over 2 GIG which it had been limited to up to then. I can see the need for a HD on a Columbus unit as it will play video.

Dont worry about it, I've simply just used a USB flash card I had, holds enough music for what I needed. Main reason i was looking into this was I got sick of waiting for the CD's to load between changes etc. USB stick is almost instant. SD cards depending on which class (2, 4, 6, 10 etc ) they are can have a fair amount of lag as well unless you pay good dollars for the class 6 & up.

as woofy said - NTFS is not "portable" friendly.
there was a new firmware, but as Ozsko said, it was to allow it to handle much larger SD cards. still in FAT32 though.

since i've got the columbus, i use the builtin 20g hdd space, plus a 4g sdhc (class 4) card. all my core must have music sits on the hdd, while my undecided music sits on the sd card.
suits me very well. i'm so glad i don't have to keep a whole stash of mostly scratched cds anymore
