Every time I connect my iPod or iPhone I get "Device without Function" error....

    Hi all,

Since picking up my car I have been getting an error every time I try connecting either my iPod or my iPhone 4 to the MDI interface, the car is a MY12 GTI with an RCD510 installed. Every time I connect either device I get a "Device Initialization" message followed by a "Device without Function" message and I can't control the devices at all.

A Google search shows a handful of people have seen a similar problem, with one thread on here mentioning the exact same error:

I've PM'd Redman from that thread but just thought I'd see if anyone else has any suggestions?

OK, quick update in case someone else has this problem. It turns out I'm an idiot. The MDI cable supplied with new vehicles is USB. I assumed that I could simply plug an iPod cable in to the USB cable, connect my iPod and away you go.

But no, they have ingeniously found a way to get an additional $50 out of the end user, there is a separate MDI cable required for iPod connectivity.

yeah, my dad got them to throw that cable in when he picked it up from dealer. You can probably find them on eBay for cheap

Yes definitely a trap for young players!

But I reckon it's false advertising on the part of VW.

In their brochures, they always picture the MDI with an iPod connected.

So who the fcuk would've thought that that isn't the standard cable provided?

I also think that stealers have a duty of care to mention this, when people are ticking MDIs as an option!
Or at least one honest one to whistleblow on this standard trick up their sleeves!

Cause I'm sure they'd all be pretty sick and tired by now acting surprised and not initially knowing the answer to this query from owners (post-delivery)!

Anyone here a lawyer or solicitor willing to file a class action pro bono?

Makes my blood boil ... the more I think about it!

Ok ... stupid question, please ignore!

Well at least it's good to know that there's still a few dodgey brothers around!

Really you just have to ask the dealer, they have a bunch lying around... Especially if they sell VW, AUDI from the same delership.

I asked yesterday and they were surprised that I was the first one to hit this issue, no one else had been back. Anyway, they agreed it was rather odd and supplied me with an iPod cable at no charge.

Dropped by my dealer today and asked about the cable. He said he's already organised that to be included when I pick my car up next month. Hopefully he stays true to his word.
