    Eonon GM5153

    Hi Guys

Just interested to know if someone has used this unit or any experience with similar Eonon units. I am looking at fitting this to my 2009 Golf TDI.

Also the page says that this will fit in my car, do i need to buy any other things or adapter with this to fit in my car. Also are there any other similarly priced units which are better than this.

I've used a bunch of Eonon units before. They're good for what they are, and for the money, but that's exactly what they are. Cheap, generic chinese units with a better OS/skin. Build quality of the units (ie the buttons, screen, plastics etc) is fairly cheap, but that's fair enough considering the price. The latest OS is pretty quick, can't really complain. OEM integration is ok, it's not the best implementation but again, for the price.

But yea, you have to go in knowing its a $300 unit, and not expecting much else, then you should be fairly happy. I've got one in my Prado and it's great, because I have used them before and know exactly what they are. For a car that only gets used maybe once or twice a month it's fine haha.

It should have the canbus harness, but probably won't take the OEM auxin/usb/RVC plugs, so you'll need to adapt them, but otherwise they're plug and play. Oh yea, and expect the radio to not be the best (vs OEM units).

Been looking to install one of these myself. I know the Eonon stuff gets a lot of negative feedback but I have now install 4 Eonon units into different cars over the last 7 years and never had any issues with any of them.

Keep us posted as to how you get on if you go ahead and get one.

What exactly does this mean i.e. what functions will work or what won't work. Will the steering wheel control work or not.

Have a look at the Eonon thread on Golfmk6.com. My guess is that Steering wheel controls should work, you should get a 1 line MFD readout (but not gps), and AC readout, but the OEM aux/usb plugs won't work unless adapted (you can see in the photos that the units have their own usb/aux in plugs), and because the radio antenna plug is an adapted powered one, you won't get as good radio reception (happens with all chinese units).

Otherwise it's a fairly standard plug and play affair, but like I said, you just gotta recognise what you are/not getting. Like I said, they're good units for the price, i'm more than happy with the one in my Prado (but that car only gets driven rarely). For me, for my daily driver, it was worth spending the money on a good unit (DNS810) and audio system (Focal speakers).

I have one in my t5. Plugs straight in. Radio reception very limited and hands free is crap, no one can hear you. No provision for external microphone. Pay more and get a better one.

I assume you don't have the GM5153 version as per the original post? The GM5153 does have provision to fit an external mic according to the Eonon web site.

Anyway I have ordered one from a Melbourne supplier and will post some feedback once it arrives and I install it into my 2007 Caddy.

I have now had my GM5153 in for a few months so here is a quick review. I have had several Eonon units over the years so knew what I was getting myself into.

The unit sounds very good. Not as good as a high end unit but good enough for my use which is mostly mp3's, so no hi-fi or lossless quality tunes.

The radio reception is not as good as OEM and the reasons for this have been covered on loads of forums so I won't waste time going into them here. I did fit a duel faka aerial connection rather than the supplied single faka version and this did help but when in the country or areas of low reception there can be some tuning issues.

The video quality is great. I watch movies when capping or waiting for the wind when I go away kitesurfing.

I'm quite impressed with the phone quality. I can make and receive calls with no problems. However the external microphone must be used. Without it the person on the other end of the call cannot here me very well at all.

All functions Bluetooth, DLNA, screen mirroring abd WI-FI work as advertised. I often mirror my Android phone to the unit when using my OBEII .

The interface is a bit cheap - beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that so some might like it.

The only complaint is the software is a bit glitchie. It will crash occasionally for no obvious reason. In my experience with Eonon units this is often the case. I find if I connect the phone via Bluetooth, then start the GPS I have no issues. If I start the GPS first, then Bluetooth this is when the unit will sometimes crash. Anyway I cab live with the crashes as it doesn't happen all the time.

I just installed a reverse camera today and it is working great. Automatically switching to camera when reverse gear is selected.

Would I recommend this unit...yes I would, with the caveat that you get what you pay for but for a unit that will play movies, music, connet with your phone and will run your reverse camera you cannot go wrong.
