Does RNS 510 show Album Art from Windows Media Player

Hello people..

I know that there has been 1 million threads on the RNS 510, but I am trying to figure a few things out before I take delivery of my car...

So, I was wondering whether the Album Art which comes up in windows media player when you rip a CD shows up on the screen on the RNS 510? Or should I delete the album art files from my lists?

Also, if I transfer all of the music from my computer onto an SD card then on to the HDD, will it be the same on the HDD as it is on my computer?

Hi Browny

Unfortunately no album art is displayed on the RNS display, so may as well delete the files before you transfer your music.

Not sure what you mean by will it be the same as it is on your computer? The RNS only plays MP3 files as well, so if you have any AAC or WMV files you will need to convert them.

Also make sure the folders have only the Mp3's and no extra files (eg thumbs.db) as they show up in the music folders.

Thank you for your help, it is much appreciated. What I meant by 'how it is on the computer', is where my music is saved in my computer is under My Music and has files (windows format....if that makes sense?) for each artist or compilation.... So I was just wondering if I copy all of these files on to an SD card, whether they will stay in the files and whether the RNS 510 will recognise these files?

Also, if I rename the files (including song titles) under the windows format, will they show up on the screen in the car or do I need to 'tag' them in Windows Media Player?

The RNS510 isn't as sophisticated as Windows Media Player or iTunes on your computer.

It displays a tree type file system that with folders you can call whatever you want and then mp3 files residing within.

I just cut and pasted my My Music folder from Windows, cleared out all the hidden album art etc and copied them onto the nav's hard drive.

Took quite a few goes to transfer it all with a 2GB card and it's slow as hell so park it in the garage and have something else to do as it loads up.

It's a bit annoying that the RNS doesn't have playlists so you will have to prepare them in advance and label the folder as such or just play them off the SD card.

The song title/album info gets displayed when it's playing, I'm no expert but I suppose that is coded into the mp3 file?

Thanks BlackSuperb.... That is great information for me. Just another quick one... Are all of your MP3s tagged properly or have you renamed them in your "My Music" windows folder? The reason I ask is because I want all song names and artists to display, so if they dont work by that method then I suppose I will need to do it via WMP and use the Tag function.

No worries. My music was ripped from my CD collection mainly so the root folder is the artist name, and the track title is the name of the mp3 file. I ripped them using Win Media Player into the mp3 format and let Media Player download the album art and track title names.

I think that's how it supposed to be done and it seems to work OK for me.

Most laborious part was deleting all the hidden files. You have to do that on the SD card on your computer before you transfer them to the RNS510 as windows will obviously need them to operate the My Music folder correctly so you have to leave them there. And if you don't remove them before transferring you can see them all on your Nav unit.

In answer to that specific question, mine displays the name of folder and the name of the mp3 it is playing.
