You will need the proper ipod/iphone cable to use your iPhone with the MDI.
Hi all,
This might be a dumb question but I just want to be 100% sure before purchasing.
Will an iPhone 4 work perfectly on an MDI with a USB cable on the end of it? I ask because I've seen MDIs with iPhone cables plugged into them or USB cables.
What's the difference?
Thanks

Excellent, that's exactly what i wanted to know.

Pawnii I think I am going down the same road as you with purchasing an MDI kit for the iPhone 4s my question is what happens when your phone rings and you are playing music through the MDI/RCD510 does the music mute and the callers name no come up on the radio screen? I also have a garmin Nuvi gps with Bluetooth will syncing that to the iPhone prevent the iPhone playing music through the MDI/RCD510? I am trying to avoid buying a OEM bluetooth kit as I have the old red/amber MFD that does not function correctly with the latest Bluetooth kits and my garmin one works well
Bambzonke, I have no idea what happens when the iphone rings and it's plugged into the MDI. Maybe someone that already has one can let us know. I have read that some people get a warning sign when you plug the iPhone into the MDI saying 'this device is not optimised', but some people don't get the warning.....strange.
It might have something to do with firmware versions on the head unit and MDI module.
I don't think syncing to your Garmin via Blutooth affects playing music via the MDI on the cable. I could be wrong.
Have a look at the end of this post, it has some good info on what we can expect with an iPhone![]()

Pawnii judging by the issues on the link you posted I think I will pay the local vw dealer a visit and connect the iPhone up and try it out first on a new tiguan before I go down the road buying a kit off flea bay. My aerial cable adapter arrived from Poland today so i will be updating my post on updating my old rcd300 to the rcd510 over the weekend.
I have noted that Delphi have updated their version of the RCD510 to include a "plus" version that now has the 26 pin socket for the reverse camera AND a direct USB input socket that supports iPods iPhones thus eliminating the need for an MDI interface! There are 2 sellers on eBay offering these units at just over AUD400

I just installed the Delphi RCD510+ (56D035190) with USB & Reverse camera socket, hand-carry from China, very cheap RMB1100 ( AUD178 ).
Plug and play, no need VCDS/Vag-com, installed in Golf MK6 TSI 118kW
SD-Card is working fine with MP3.
FM Radio does not display RDS though, as compared to default RCD310.
Also, the MDI USB at armrest, does not work (for now). Not yet try the AUX port at armrest also.
I'm not sure if need a separate cable/plug for USB ?
Going to search for reverse camera module, either the VW badge or license plate light.
