I've helped a couple of guys in Melbourne now with installs.
    An R32 and a Mk6 GTI.

The most difficult part is integrating the highline RVC, if you want to retain that. I did so I replaced the module with the MY16 Tiguan part. It requires running a new harness from the boot to the front of the car, so it's a pain but not that difficult.

Otherwise its pretty straight forward. Remove the old Bluetooth, use the existing mic to plug into the new unit, decide where you want to put the USB port (in my case I put it through to the centre console because the new one I got had the integrated MDI and the port fits exactly).

How handy are you with pulling trim and parts, and do you want to keep the highline RVC, or would you be happy with losing the guidelines and just getting the reverse image?

I don't have highline RVC, it is a dealer fit camera. Static lines, and from how it behaves I am fairly sure it is just a simple analog signal. I also have dealer fit Bluetooth, which is a Kufatec Fiscon, and I'd be happy to take that out, throw it on the ground, and burn it.

USB into centre console bin most likely, next to the existing 3.5mm aux jack. I have the MDI in the glovebox for iPod etc but I would be happy to lose that if required, if I can retain it that's just a nice bonus. But it all comes down to parts cost imo and if it is relatively simple trim removal and cable unplugging etc I have no issue. So far I have pulled off the door cards, front bar, a bit of the headliner and a pillar to run my dash cam power down behind the dash... and installed those DRL's, that's the extent of my comfort level. Depends how this fits in with that type of work.

Ok so yours should be a pretty straight forward job.
Your RVC will have to be going through an RGBS converter to allow it to plug into the 26 pin multimedia connector on the back of the RNS.
So you'll just have to take this out and plug the composite signal straight into the new head unit.
Pull out (and burn) the Kufatec.
I think you might need to get a new microphone (they are about $12 on ali express) but you can probably try the existing one first. You'll need to pull the pins out of the connector at the BT module and plug them into the correct plug in the quadlock adapter.

MDI is no longer supported, but you'd have an SDCard slot for up to 2TB cards for music, or you can stream off your phone for Spotify, BT streaming, Apple music or whatever you like, or through Android Auto/Apple Carplay.

From the stuff you've done you wouldn't have any issues.

The patched Discover Media, maps SDcard, quadlock adapter harness and a new CANbus gateway I can get to you for $1800.

Oh wow, that's actually a reasonable cost! I was going to get the premium BT at some point, I won't need that with this obviously. This sounds quite doable over a weekend some time. Not at all what I expected which was like double that and a huge head****.

I'll chuck you a PM on here to organise grabbing parts off you when I'm ready some time later this year methinks! You're a champ for trying this stuff haha!

...I'm trying to hold myself back from doing lane keeping assist with the B8 Passat camera....don't think I can stop myself though...

Yeah the integrated Bluetooth is very good. Connects instantly and quality is excellent.
Much better than 9w7/9ZA and goes without saying that i's better than the Kufatec.

I've done all the head****'ing work for you over the past 12 months so that I know exactly what is needed depending what you have in your car and how to get to where ever you want to be.

@Jakeys, why not do a road trip to Sydney and make a weekend of it. I just travelled up from the Monaro to get @kamold's help to install Discover Media, a Mk6 MFSW and Mk7 Climatronic into my 2010 Tiguan. Everything went well (apart from my old battery that needed to be replaced), and he is a wealth of knowledge and a champion of a bloke to boot!

Thanks arcadelt, hope that new AGM battery is cranking like a donkey, and your new wine fridge is maturing your favourite vinos.
My neighbour was very envious of your nice galvinized trailer

Yeah the prework you did is what I mean, I would never have done it, I'd simply assumed this would be super impossible. I'm amazed it only requires a few new parts to get Android Auto factory spec into a 2009-10 car. Plus the other benefits of the unit, it looks EXCELLENT in your videos. I'm hyped, but I'm also due a service and new tyres first heh. Since I have no Bluetooth and the iPod MDI doesn't support current Apple devices properly any more, I'm exclusively using AUX 3.5mm input these days. A fresh infotainment and the low km's I put on the car now I'll probably own it yet another five years!

I don't have a proper interest in the lane keeping, active cruise etc as I'm happy with the car's feature set in every area except infotainment... and I wish it were a little faster for today's standards but turbocharging it is a bit out of my wallet comfort zone.

EDIT: Yeah, I've never been to Sydney, I guess it could be a fun trip. We'll see how the year goes, I may decide to do that instead, I was kind of hoping to not spend too much more money doing car stuff and buy a bike for the daily commute and just keep the R36 for shopping, dates with girls and inclement weather.

Actually when I'm doing this it would be a great opportunity to install the Dynaudio amp I have had sitting in a box for years haha. I still need to make a custom adapter for it to get it to fit cause my car is a MY10.5 and the amp is MY09 but I have the required plug, just need to do a bit of soldering outside the car...

Some of my retrofits are largely academic exercises (like PLA 2.0, but it's a cool party trick) but others like adaptive cruise I find really useful.
I'm hoping my car keeps going too as I've updated it now to the point where there aren't really any compelling features in a new car that I could justify over mine.
The infotainment is one area where it becomes quite obvious where the gap is between the previous generation and current.
The Discover Media really is a pleasure to use every day.
