aussietig: When you say downgrade, do you mean downgrade firmware or downgrade maps? I'll try my 4.0 maps disc and see what happens.

Ryan_R: Battery should be ok - hope so anyway because i've done just exactly that today, loaded firmware, maps and reloaded my music on hdd (via SD card) so hope it starts tomorrow

    I mean map.

Yes ... loading an older map first will allow the unit to re-detect the v4.1 map (whether with or without the POI mod) as a new map to begin install.

I don't think it's an issue. I've done upgrade and downgrade all in one session before (in the past) and haven't had any issues.

Short of stating the obvious ... only firmware type installs require no keys in ignition.
Map & music ... you can load these with ignition on and car running if need be.

Map installation only took about 5 mins as far as I could tell, so no problems there. Got music on an SD card, will load it tomorrow. Was too hot in the car and the lights inside were attracting the mozzies when I opened the windows

In other words ... it's not a new map according to the unit and so won't do anything with it.

You actually need to change the disk name to something different (e.g. CD_7493)

Bit of a pain if you don't have POInspect0r.

So quickest way is to load an older map (e.g. V3 or V4 map) onto your unit HDD first.

Then it will recognize your modded V4.1 map.

    That should work!
When I read your post I thought "that's logical"

What I failed with was to advise in my original post, that the DVD was showing up as "error" and wouldn't load. Since your post....I downgraded back to V3 maps, then tried to load the POI modified V4.1....still the same result.

I'm using my usual method...using IMGburn as the software, slowest speed possible, same brand DVD/R as previously used (successfully). hmmmm.........

Just wanted to thank kamold and aussietig for all the time/effort in working out how to get this working - meant I was able to upgrade and get it all working within 90 minutes

Not sure whether you've managed to get it to work.

But if not, then I would have to say that it must be something wrong with the way you appended the modified POI file.

Would suggest that you try (if not already) using IMGburn and create a new iso file of the modified map disk. Then burn the iso file to disc.

The fact Ryan_R managed to do this upgrade as well, suggests it does work (i.e. re-load old map first).

BTW, I do believe the POI.db3 file is also useless to FW 2XXX, as it is a file structure required by FW 3XXX.
But don't think it's related to your disk error (assuming the error is occurring immediately and not part way through the install).

Ok....so all I did was replace the POI.db3 file, then using IMGBurn...created a new .iso and burned that to a DVD at 1x speed (same process I have used before). I am using FW2760....so maybe it is rejecting the POI file structure.

And correct on the last part...the disk "error" is shpowing up almost immediately after inserting the disc.

Might have to bite the bullet and go to FW3xxx to make it work.

I presume that there won't be any power issues with doing ~2 hours worth of software upgrades on the RNS510 (C unit) without the engine running.
After it started installing, i needed to use the car. You can drive around no problems while it is still installing.

So...no probs going direct from 2760 to 3970 on a C version unit?

Nope, you just loose all your music, but things like Radio presets, Phone speed-dials, navigation destination history, etc are preserved (was somewhat surprised, they must be on a separate flash memory drive). Only noticeable changes are the new startup logo (nicer), more HDD space for music (thanks to those custom partition sizes) and the POI functionality. Haven't tested to see if I've lost VIM but I've read that it should still be there.

Took about 57 mins to do the FW upgrade, then when the unit is running, just press Maps, and it will ask you to insert the CD, and it copies the data fairly quickly (5 mins) and you'll see the streets appear as it nears completion (depending on your zoom level).

Piece of cake compared to the rear camera install we did yesterday.
