Can't Remove MKIV Stock Head Unit

is that a standard size double din unit (180 x 100 mm) ? mine flushed up perfect once I attached in my double din cage into the console. that gap seems awkwardly big...well if it's not standard size, you'll be best off getting the cage the unit slides into mounted higher in the dash, leaving a gap below the h/u, won't be as noticeable.

As far as I'm aware its a regular sized one, dimensions are 177 x 100 mm. I think the issues is it didn't come with it's own cage/fascia piece. I've just ordered one of these:

I think that should make it fit nicely. Now I just need to cut a few bits off the back of the trim cage as the head unit is getting blocked from sliding back as far as it could go which means it's not sitting flush. I tried starting this off with a swiss army knife but it's hard work and I may need to buy a dremel :S. My reversing camera should be arriving tomorrow so I'm sure I'll be running into more issues soon...

Oh well I'm just glad I could get the stock unit out!

Hey guys new question, I've cut out the plastic bar bit at the back of the trim cage in order to push the head unit back far enough to sit flush... but despite this it still isn't quite flush

Does anyone know what the big hard plastic molded bit is behind the trim cage? Can I try bending this back a bit safely?

Try neatening your wires at the back first, things like the antenna plug can get in the way quite easily.

The moulded plastic part(s) are for your air vents

Aso the fascia will be about 5 mm thick at least and so take up a bit of space.

At worst you coul cut a packer out of some plastic to go behind the fascia when you get it.

The wires are *fairly* neat, the antenna isn't plugged in as I'm waiting on an adapter to arrive. Once I get my fascia trim piece and the radio I'm going to remove the climatronic again so I can pull the wires down as I push the unit back which may help a bit but I think that won't be enough.

The issue is my ebay cheapy head unit just sticks out a little more than some most likely

So if its just the air vents it *shouldn't* be too much of an issue if I try to compress them back a little?

Nope, from memory the plastic directly behind the head unit slot is for the vents under the seats

If your putting in a camera, just leave the dash pulled apart, I found best route under the centre console, there is a loom i tagged into, ran my rca's to the back, under the rear seats carpet, and then spliced the reverse lights power cable, then used this to turn camera on when in reverse.
as far as depth goes, if you've already hacked the cage, then there really isn't much more you can do, it's pretty squished back there, unfortunately having a big double DIN wasn't one of the considerations during original construction

Once you get your fascia hopefully it blends the h/u in a bit to the dash. Good luck!

I actually just installed the camera, in terms of running cables I managed to run it behind the right hand side wall in the boot, then under the seats. Although instead of going up the middle I went underneath the drivers side plastic trim pieces and then up under the steering wheel. Cable worked a treat and you can't see the cable at all even when you lift the rear seats and spare wheel cover.

One small issue though, the screen gets no signal from the camera.... Just my luck. But i think it's cause I did a bad splice into the reverse line but I was too tired at 1am last night to try fix it. Will give it another go on the weekend.
