Thread: Best deal on an RNS510

  1. #31

Decided against a new can bus in the first instance and to try to downgrade from 2660 to 1100 with a version B RNS 510. I'll follow Mavericks instruction and hopefully it works!

Why don't you first try and see if you actually have a battery drain problem first or not (running FW 2660)?

Not sure what vehicle you have, but some ppl have reported no problems despite their vehicles fitting the description.

    Just a thought!

Nevertheless, make sure you enable "SW downgrade" within the Test/Secret menu, if wanting to roll back to FW 1100.

Good advice. I have read instances where pre MY08 cars have had no battery drain issues as the can bus was version L or newer. Depends on the canbus I guess - I'll check it out.

Just as an aside how do you access the SW downgrade menu? Does the unit need to be fitted into the car to be downgraded?

Also do you know if the power drain issues actually kill the battery? I only replaced my battery last week at a cost of $240. Don't want to drop another $250 at this point.

    Thanks mate

Need to enable test/secret menu first: http://www.my-gti.com/1200/

If you haven't got VCDS, then apparently this custom recovery disk contains the code to enable it:
    http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f78/...tml#post684071

Just download the file and burn to disk and install onto RNS510. Once installed, go to this thread: http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f78/...enu-59346.html for link to YouTube on how to access the menu.

But basically hold the "setup" button for a good 15 sec for it to pop up. Enabling "SW downgrade" is within the very last menu option (once you're in the secret menu).

I don't know how you can get away with not connecting the unit to the car to downgrade it.

From memory, there are symptoms of power drain way before you need to stand beside the road and show a bit of leg in the hope for a jump start.

Just have a look at Maverick's site: my-gti.com for further info on the battery drain. But from memory I think the unit just doesn't shut down after you've turned ignition off for at least 15 minutes or so.

My unit runs 2720 (haven't upgraded yet aussietig !) and no battery drain issue on an '06 Passat. It is a MY'07 though (built at end of '06 and sold in '07) so may have a later canbus.

Ok sounds very promising. I may run the risk of running it with firmware 2660 and see how I go. Thanks for the advice.
