Cool. A bit more practise and I reckon you could crack 30 seconds
I've put together a very quick install video for the Golf R - it claims to be '30 seconds' but ended up taking almost 2 minutes.
Note that the step you don't see on the video was that the first time the relay box is moved there is another unrelated controller between relay box and the gateway with the red plug. I had already moved that out of the way on my first install attempt - it is just tucked in behind the gateway box to make the swap-over easier.
Although the FIS+ box is just left tucked in behind the cubby hole I haven't noticed any rattles as yet, though I do plan to put some velcro on the back of it to secure it a bit more.

damn you make that look easy. I feel ashamed at how long I spent with the other method (stupid wiper motor).
I like the info, I'm just not 100% happy with the way it displays and prefer the look of all the little gauges that Torque provides on a shiny colour screen. If the FIS+ could display on the RNx510 with pretty colours and gauges that would change my mind completely. Since there is provision for TV in the car there should be a way to make this sort of thing happen... although maybe without any touch screen goodness.
But yeah, bottom line I prefer the look of the alternative even if it's not so integrated.... although I might look at hard mounting it down near the power adaptor/coin holder space... fibreglass and all

You should keep saving up for a GT-R
Knowing your skills I'm sure you'll come up with something fantastic. Go for a nice Android tablet that you keep in the car permanently (although the next challenge is discouraging theft)

outputs to composite video - like the satnav screen AUX video input
Great, now you've doomed Adam into spending more money
Understand what you're saying about flashy dials. And yes integration with RNx510 would be nice. I'm guessing that they went with MFD interface because almost everyone has got one.
Though may ask A-P if there's a possibility for FIS2+ with video out for displaying through head units. Imagine this would be a fair bit of work as it's both hardware and software change.
Firing up the car after work I noticed the diagnostics screen appear on the RNS510 again
Then I noticed the car switched from playing Media to Radio by itself, station presets intacts
Then I notice that the speed limitation on the map screen has turned itself back on
And tonight on another trip I've noticed that the RNS510 no longer shows me the reversing camera at all, as if the entire coding for the RNS510 has been reset. Also I checked in the MFD PF settings and that RNS510 secret menu option had turned itself back on, I've again turned it off since it's on in the firmware.
Strange, I hope this isn't a regular occurrence.
I see there's a new update available - 3.0.1 - which seems like bug fixes more than anything.
FIS+ Advanced : New Update v0.3.1 [03-12-2012]
On another note, does the TV_Free function allow the display of the reversing camera whilst moving, or just a DVD or video from the RNS' AUX input?
