OK so there's bits of info all over the place about the AutoPolar FIS+ Advanced so I'm going to consolidate all the important information in the first few posts of this thread with general discussion after.
If you don't know what the Autopolar FIS+ Advanced is or what it does then here's a link to a video which shows a number of features of the device:
Basically it's a box which sits next to your CANBUS gateway unit and adds extra diagnostic information/features into your MFD. Further details on FIS+ and it's features is available here: What is Polar FIS+ Advanced?

Links to Installation threads for each model (for overseas visitors please note these are all Australian delivered RHD models. CANBUS gateway can be in different locations depending on LHD/RHD and model):
It all started with this thread and the idea of an inbuilt digital boot gauge.
Essentially it's talking about the AutoPolar FIS products (I warn you that if you click this link you will want one, consider yourself warned): Autopolar Official Web site
Now the install instructions looked pretty straight forward, drop a cover panel above the pedals and plug in the module... simple enough right... NOPE. Those instructions are designed for a LHD car not RHD, it's also not a 118TSI so I'm not sure if it's different on the GTI, but here we are). EDIT: Confirmed that GTI is in the same place, looks like it's a RHD thing then and everyone will be stuck with this process.
So after removing the knee air page, the air vents above the pedals and the panel on the drivers side I've discovered that the CANBUS plug I was looking for was not anywhere near either of those locations... in fact you have to access it from the engine bay.
It turns out the module and the plug I was looking for is buried right up just behind the rain tray. Luckily I have had to access this panel before so was somewhat prepared for what came next.
My total time end to end including some testing and a lot of screwing around was somewhere between two and three hours. The real time should be something like 1.5 Hours since you will know what you're doing.
NOTE: Before I started taking photo's I had actually pulled everything apart so these photos were taken putting everything back together and will be shown in reverse order to show you how to pull it all apart.
So let me start.
It all started when the FedEX man delivered this this afternoon:
They say you should plug it into your computer with the supplied USB cable and update it's firmware, especially if you have a vehicle with a white display as it needs to be updated before it will work with the newer cars. It says it only supports Windows with IE7+. Firing up my XP Machine and going to their website saw the upgrade done pretty easily. Sorry I didn't grab any screen shots of this bit.
Read the instructions, it's worth checking the stock location mentioned in here because that would make install more like 15 minutes. If you can't see the plug they are talking about in about 5 minutes it's probably safe to say it's in the same location as mine.
NOTE: If a GTI owner can confirm if the plug is in the same place as mine I will remove this step.
Start by opening the bonnet:
You need to remove the wipers, rain tray and wiper motor.
Remove the plastic covers on the wiper assembly with a flat bladed screw driver, be careful not to mark them up.
Remove the nuts holding the wipers in and the wipers themselves:
Then pull the rubber along the front of the tray gently off:
And the foam pieces on each side. Note that there is a cable clipped to the drivers side as pictured, unclip that as your next step is to remove the plastic tray.
The plastic tray has a lip which clips into a grove along the bottom of the window. Gentle pull up and it should come loose. It does take a little force but it will come loose:
You will have to bend it slightly to remove it from between the bonnet hinges.
(again make sure you have unclipped the wire on the drivers side).
Next you want to remove the wiper motor assembly itself. Two torx screws and it will come loose. It takes a little angling to get it out of it's hole, but it should come free easily.
Now under that wiper you should see a neat little plastic panel. (Ignore the rubber pipe in mine... like I said, I have been here before).
Three nuts and the panel lifts out to reveal a bunch of wires and a little plastic box:
It's this box with the red plug you want!
It's at this point I remembered they recommend disconnecting the battery before doing any more work... so do that.
It's also about now that I realised that if I was going to mount this box in this location that any future upgrades might just be real PITA. To get around this I have permanently attached the supplied USB cord and run it down into the space behind that little cubby on the right of the steering wheel... that space is getting rather full for me...
A couple of cable ties to neaten it up and it's there whenever I need to do a firmware upgrade. (of course this is only useful if you have a laptop).
Back to the engine bay and it's simply a matter of plugging in the cables and installing the box into the space behind that panel.
You can now re-connect the battery and test it all works including a test drive. After that it's simply the reverse order to get everything installed back how it should be.
In my case I don't have an "additional" menu item, rather this new menu has taken over the Phone menu... BUT don't worry, pressing the phone button the multifunction steering wheel bring up the old menu as does making or receiving a phone call.
I haven't had a big play with it yet, but I do have a short video:

1. Pull off the fuse panel cover (driver's side).
2. Pull out the cubby box to the right of the driver's knee (under the headlight switch). To do this, open it fully, squeeze the sides at the top and the top of the box will open even further. From there simply pull out from the bottom and it will slide off the hinges.
3. Move the large relay panel out of the way. Undo the clip to the left and the panel will swing towards you. Use 2 long cable ties to hook around the relay panel and pull it up out of the way so it sits above the gap opened up by the cubby box. You can hook the cable ties through the top frame of the fuse panel.
4. You will see a small plastic box with a single hex screw on the right and a browny/yellow connector on the top. Undo the screw and pull that plastic box out towards you. There is plenty of length on the cable for you to pull the box out without undoing the connector on the top. You will need to jiggle the box to squeeze it through the space to the left of the screw but it will come out.
5. The magic red plug gateway box is now visible. From here you can either try to unplug the connector with the box where it is, or if you jiggle the box itself you will find that it comes away from the two plastic clips that hold it in place. Once loose you can pull it out of the same space to the left of that screw you undid in step 4. Again there is enough cable to pull the box out to where the cubby box lives.
6. Connect the FIS+ unit, test and confirm everything is OK.
7. From here you have 2 choices - put everything back as it came out, or put the browny/yellow top box back in first so the gateway box remains more accessible. I chose to do this, which means that the two boxes I pulled out of that space aren't clicked into the original mounting spots. They are however jammed in pretty tight in there so I can't see that being an issue as they're certainly not going to move around.
8. If you want to keep the FIS+ unit accessible, run the cord over the top of the relay box when you put it back in place. The relay box is shaped like an L so there's room on the top for the FIS+ cable to run past.
9. Put everything back together in the reverse order from above.
I've put together a very quick install video for the Golf R - it claims to be '30 seconds' but ended up taking almost 2 minutes.
Note that the step you don't see on the video was that the first time the relay box is moved there is another unrelated controller between relay box and the gateway with the red plug. I had already moved that out of the way on my first install attempt - it is just tucked in behind the gateway box to make the swap-over easier.
Although the FIS+ box is just left tucked in behind the cubby hole I haven't noticed any rattles as yet, though I do plan to put some velcro on the back of it to secure it a bit more.
I'd like to add the suggestion for the cabin install, if you're struggling to lift up the gateway module, you can get a long flat head screwdriver and leverage it under the small notch near the bottom of unit as shown towards the right of this photo:
OK after much searching I've finally located the CANBUS gateway in my Tiguan. It's in behind the glove box - requires removal of the glovebox and it is very simple install once this is removed.
Glovebox removal instructions (thanks to bambazonke):
1. Remove 5 torx screws (3 at top and 2 at the bottom)
2. Unclip side panel by wedging upwards and then pulling out from rubber door seal
3. Wedge carefully out cubby hole light and unplug
4. Slide glove box out and then unclip rubber tube from air con to cool glove box
5. Unclip glove box light switch from the back of the glove box near the air con tube as discussed in step 4
6. Unclip open/close contact switch from centre back of glove box housing
Then you'll see that gateway connector right in front of you:
7. Assembly is in reverse order.
I've stashed the Autopolar FIS+ box just under the removable trim in the footwell so there's only a wing nut to undo and easy access to the unit for future firmware upgrades.

IMO going from the top through the rain tray was much much easier. There are only 2 stumbling blocks...
1) getting the wiper arms off the spindle after you undo the nut - trick is to grab the wiper blade with right hand and hold it just off the glass then with the left hand grab the spring loaded hinge and gently push down then pull up again and again and it will walk off the spindle.
2) Getting the wiper mechanism out - trick is to take out the torx bolts. move the wiper mechanism towards the center of car till you can drop the side part down under the mounting location, then shift it back up under the windscreen towards the side of the car. Now rotate the front of the mechanism up and the center part will now slide up and out then just gently wiggle the wiper mechanism up and out towards the center of the car.
What I also did was put some split loom tube over the FIS+ connection cables so it does not rub and wear against anything under the dash.
Some additional tips,
Remove coin tray under headlight switch - there is no need to touch relay panel.
Take out windscreen wiper motors and use the Trap door under the windscreen to connect you harness to the CANBUS module.
Connect the FIS harness and poke the cabling down the LHS (side where the steering column is) of the Plastic compartment where the Modules are. There is a gap and the new style of Harness will reach all the way down to under your steering wheel.
Go inside your car raise and pull out steering wheel to MAX. Stick you hand inside cubby hole and in gap under steering wheel and connect the FIS box.
Put FIS box under the steering wheel, rest it on top of the lower kick panel where the gap is. use double side tape if you want.
OK so now there 's no excuses of you have an Octavia

The pictures are from my 2011 Octavia RS Australian delivered model, however its possible all RHD models will be similar.
Make sure your Polar FIS+ has the latest version of firmware. For all Australian delivered models, you need the WHITE version.
I don't have pictures for all steps, only the critical ones.
1. Remove battery. This step is ESSENTIAL.
2. Remove the headlight switch. Turn to OFF, push the knob in and turn clockwise until it clicks. Then pull the whole unit towards you. Unplug from loom.
3. Remove the silver (black) headlight switch surround. It just unclips.
4. Remove the silver (black) trim on the other side of the steering wheel. It also unclips, but you may need to lever it GENTLY from the bottom.
5. Remove the fuse box cover from the right-hand end of the dashboard, where the door trim meets the dash. Use a screwdriver, or your car key.
5. Remove the screws to the panel below the steering wheel. With steps 3-5, you uncovered 3 of them. They are located, to the left and right of the steering wheel, behind the fuse cover panel, and two at the bottom of the panel. You'll need a torch to see them. They are torx screws, cant remember the size.
6. Remove the whole panel by pulling it gently towards the seat, be careful of the consult port.
8. The area behind where the 'pocket' was has a few relays. You need to remove the top-front section. The picture shows the clip:
9. Now you should see a glimpse of the gateway, its the blue plug at the back of this photo:
10. The blue plug is a little difficult to remove at first. The clip is on the back (faces the front of the car) so you'll need to bend your hand into a position that normal humans cant. For some reason, I had no problems.
11. You'll be left with this plug. Join it up with the Polar FIS loom. Plug the other end into the gateway, and finally the 3rd plug goes into the Polar FIS.
12. Mount the Polar FIS box somewhere you can access it easily for upgrades, or leave the USB cable plugged in and leave the cable in the 'pocket' or behind the fuse box cover.

Pinch the tab - pos. 1 in the picture then gently pull towards you and carefully move it to the left, so you can put your hand inside to reach the canbus connector.
You can then disconnect the battery, remove the red canbus connector and plug in the cable that comes with the FIS+ unit. Finally install the FIS+ unit and find a suitable place to secure it, reconnect the battery and replace the items you have moved in reverse steps.
