Is there a DIY instruction for installing the reverse camera in a Golf Variant (Jetta Sportwagen in the US)? Routing wires? Tapping reverse light wiring? etc...

Not that old, unfortunately. The model with the older car compatibility is the ANS-420 / 410 which fits B5 Passat and mk4 Golf / mk5 Polo, but for Fabia that shape only goes back to 2006. That's not to say you can't modify your dash to make it fit though, if that's what you're into.

    Here you go:

How to install OEM backup camera on mk5 mk6 VW Golf or VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI JSW

Keep in mind that is for the badge camera install, plus with the newer revision of current ANS units as well as the new platform, there is a dedicated RVC power wire and you will not need to tap the reverse light.

I was asking for a friend of mine and he is not looking to do modify anything.

Speaking of new units, any updates?

    Thanks again DkN.

I bought an RVC boot handle set-up on aliexpress since Audiosource sent me the wrong camera for my vehicle. I went ahead and performed the installation yesterday prior to your response by using the provided instructions that came with the RVC.

    1. I tapped the right rear reverse light power line (blue-black) and connected this directly to the power (red) wire of the RVC.
    2. I then spliced the RVC negative line (black) to the ground line (brown) in the rear tail light plug.
    3. I ran the RCA video cable to the front of the car through the headliner and connected it to the back of the ANS-810 at the connector labelled 'Cam IN'. It was a yellow RCA jack with a green wire.

I don't get any reverse video feed when I place the manual trans in reverse. I get no video feed at all. And, my right rear reverse light does not work. I have checked my splices and even re-did them. They are all soldered and show continuity using a multimeter. All fuses are good.

So, what else do I need to do? I assumed that since this is an aftermarket RVC and head unit that I do not have to use VCDS to activate the backup camera. Is this correct?

Any idea why the reverse light I spliced into is not working? All connections check out as good. Bulb is good too. Am I missing something??

Here's the instructions that came with the RVC:

OK, so I went for a drive and was playing the radio. I randomly had the OPS screen activate along with muting the sound. I couldn't get out of this screen but it randomly would revert back to the radio. It tended to revert back when I stopped at a traffic stop but was not all the time. It was not related to gear changes, being in neutral, or applying the brakes.

It definitely appears I have something wired incorrectly. If anyone can guide me in the right direction I'd greatly appreciate it. The RVC never activated at anytime during this bizarre sequence of events.

The instructions that come with the RVC are generic. Don't wire the power directly to the reverse light, use a relay switch. Get the relay from your reverse light and wire power to an ACC 12v source like your cigarette lighter or the antenna power wire behind your ANS unit.

I'll convert to a relay set up. But, would the lack of a relay set up really lead to it not working?

    Schultp,

Agree with DkN on this. I had a similar experience when setting up a generic RVC with ANS810. I had tapped into the reverse light power and checked to confirm that I was getting 12V to the cam when in reverse. Even so the camera refused to display when I put into reverse gear. I changed the wiring to get the power from the 12V supply in the boot instead and all worked as it should. Use a relay and it should be OK.

Yes, the reverse light power is monitored by the CAN-Bus and may or may not respond well to a direct power tap. It varies from car to car (works for some, doesn't work for others) but issues with directly tapping the reverse light generally on VW vehicles have been previously documented. If you want to know the specifics, I believe it has something to do with the reverse light signal being a pulse signal.

The OPS coming up by itself is interesting though, I've not heard of that happening. The OPS can function without the reverse camera so theoretically it shouldn't be affected by the RVC, however it's possible that the software has a failsafe that if for some reason if the OPS did not switch on when it's supposed to, it will still switch on if power is supplied to the RVC. This would mean an unstable power source that perhaps feeds a little bit of power to the camera when not in reverse could trick the OPS into turning on.
