    Question Aftermarket sound system options

After finally having enough cash to start seriously looking around for a sub and an amp to put in my car due to wanting to eradicate the distortion from high volumes while while increasing my bass output (cause I love bass ), I was told but JB HI-FI sales attendant that I could get a pretty decent kicker 12inch sub and amp for around $550 installed, but they would still have to check out my car see where everything would go rah rah etc.

Came back the next day and the guy checked out my car and found that there would be a problem as there is no way through my factory head unit to eliminate bass from the speakers and direct it all to the sub, therefore not eliminating my problem of distortion at higher volumes and just wacking a whole lot of bass into the car which is really pointless and not achieving what I wanted to.

He then proceded to explain that the only way to do this was to install an aftermarket head unit, which A) I didn't want to do as I wanted to keep it looking clean and factory and B) costs a heap more than I wanted to spend as I need a double DIN unit plus all the other bits and bobs needed plus installation which would come somewhere north of $750.

He then went onto mention that if I was wishing to keep the stock look I could look around for a better VW headunit that could possibly eliminate bass from the speakers and just send it to the sub, which is my problem. I have in my 06 Jetta TFSI a RCD 500, so would upgrading to a better unit do this for me?

Anyone have any advice on my situation or any knowledge they have on this kind on this set up I am wanting? Or have had success doing what I am wanting through another means? Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

(As a side note, this guy from JB Northland was really great, helped me out a ton and was really knowledgeable, kudos to him )

A good installer should be able to "cap-off" the speakers, thereby eliminating deep bass frequencies to your front stage and rear fill. This involves using capacitors to cause roll-off below a certain frequency point.

You could install a 4 channel amp for your speakers with a roll-off crossover which will do the same thing. I have this type of set-up in my GTI.
