Hi,
I have just driven and purchased my first VW (but it is actually for my wife) and was told about vw watercooled by my brother who has a Jetta and an A4. It is a 2006 Golf 4motion TDi 6 speed and goes really well. It has no stereo as the previous owner had it removed due to religious reasons. I would like to have a stereo refitted and have it controlled from the steering wheel buttons. I am told from installers that this is possible (but expensive) on some stereo's but not possible at all with other models of stereo. It would also be nice to be able to put the phone through the radio via the steering wheel but I am told the adaptor for this costs around $1200. Can any one give me any advice. Thanks
Failing that you can pick up OEM stereo's quite cheap, but make sure you get the pin included. I retrofitted a single din alpine and used PAC converters for the steering controls, and you can have them do anything the stereo can support, and the converter cost was between $200-$300 from memory, certainly not that expensive. Here's one of the two I used, from a quick google....

Most aftermarket companies have awesome double din ( to fit the big hole ) units now, Alpine has a beauty out currently. With the US to Aussie conversion, certainly a lot of options out there for you right now.
I'd be more concerned at buying a car from someone who figured the wireless was the work of Satan. Still, with drivetime radio, sometimes you have to wonder.....

Thanks Greg,
I will take your advice and look around some more. I have a new JVC that would be good to use since I already have it but will buy something else if I need to.
Don't worry I am buying the car from the VW dealer i was told by them that the Brethern were not allowed to listen to the radio.
Oh and no they did not have the original radio unfortunately.
