That said, it looks like the next version is a full version too, so that opens the possibility that only the disc for the current version needs to be kept.
    • RNS-510 + v9 Maps Update = v9 Maps Full. I am now free to sell the v8 Maps Update disc.
RNS Map DVD's can be installed on a blank (read: fresh) unit. Good example is when you do an SSD swap, because you start fresh.
The firmware is held on the ROM, but the maps are held on the storage device.

EDIT: Come to think of it, firmware updates also clean your map storage out too. I know I've had to reload mine more than once, in the last five years.

So, I see the v9 map updates are still 4X the price of the v8 ones. I should emphasise a word there, Updates. The things many software companies, and some satnav makers, send out electronically and don't charge for. Changes to existing mapping, and not mapping from scratch. No team of surveyors out for months with theodolites roaming every square inch of Oz & NZ on horses and camels.

Just got back from Melbourne where I found the v8 maps inadequate. Trying to get me to go the wrong way down one way streets, and through beautifully landscaped parks, etc.

Let's be honest. The RNS 510 has always been clunky. I realised that it was nowhere near as good as my old voice activated TomTom from the first couple of times I used it. I don't want a pretty screen. I want a functional nav system with reasonably priced updates.

U-P-D-A-T-E-S. Not only has the price quadrupled, but the so-called "updates" are still like travel guides, i.e. by the time the info is gathered, verified, edited, published and distributed it's already out of date. VW's annual/biannual map releases are quite simply horse**** compared to TomTom's 5 per year, which I only ever buy when they're half price offer comes on. And if you email them they refund the 20% VAT. They have to. To state the obvious, Australia isn't an EU country, so is VAT exempt. TomTom bills AU customers from The Netherlands. Long and short of it is the TomTom updates can be cheap as chips.

The RNS-510 was standard in my car. I think it was around a $2500 option at the time for some other models. It has it's uses, but considering some phone nav apps, and even my 9 year old 930 Go there is no way I can justify to myself shelling out even $200 for already out of date mapping simply because VW Australia thinks it has me by the short an curlies.

For all its shortcomings I was going to put an RNS-510 in my wife's Golf to replace her RCD-310. Not now. Like me, she wants more than a pretty screen.

Can't disagree with anything you have said. The only reason I chose (yes, CHOSE) to put an RNS-510 into both of my cars was integration: turn guidance on the MFD and voice guidance gently woven into any and all audio sources. However, the ongoing expense and clunkiness of the system has tested me on ocassions, and I now wonder if a CarPlay system would have been a better bet, especially one that provide some CANBUS integration as Alpine does. The rumour that the v9 maps will be the last update for the RNS-510 that VWA will ever provide is making me further reconsider my decision, and as soon as Alpine brings out the replacement for the ILX-007, with wireless connectivity, I think it will be time for a change.

The integration is the only reason I've put up with the RNS-510 this long, so I get what you're saying. If there was an alternative, which seamlessly worked with bluetooth handsfree, mfw, and head unit it'd be great, but hence my "short and curlies" remark.

I've bought new a Skoda Octy VRS about 5 years ago. Overall I've been very happy with it. I'd have liked some more seat adjustment (seat squab tilt) that I had on Beamers 20 years ago, and a far better nav system. Going backwards (clunky operation, voice activation that's as useful as a chocolate teapot, and no safety camera warnings let alone audible safety camera warnings) when buying a new car was a major disappointment, and has been irking me ever since it fully sank in.

I'm thinking of moving to a new Superb soon. As far as the nav system goes I won't be settling for the 'take it or leave it' option this time around.

Will be interesting to see how much V10 version will be.
Volkswagen team is quoting $700 per maps and they cant get it yet....
V9 is pretty current still and only a couple of these left..

Sweet Georgia Brown.......this has gone up to $595.....and looking like $700 for V10? Unbelievable.

I've been using Android Auto in a hire car in Canada for the past 2 weeks. If I can find a decent replacement for the 510 that keeps all the integration (this may be wishful thinking) i'll be all over it......

V9 has sold out so the price has been adjusted.

V10 is not a horizon yet

Of course, CarPlay is not available for those of us that have the RNS-510 in our cars.

do you still have any available for purchase?
I'm currently using V8 maps, curious to know how much more has been updated...
I cannot justify spending the money on V10 maps (ludicrous...)
    Thanks
