Is it ok to drive on this oil?

Hi guys,

I realize this topic has been dealt with to death, but just want some reassurance. Picked up my MK6 Golf GTI 2 weeks ago (used, 37,000k on the clock). First thing, oil change - I dont believe waiting 15k between oil changes.

Quick search revealed 5W-30 fully synthetic for the GTI. Did the oil change yesterday with Castrol Edge Titanium 5W-30. Reading some forums now, realised it is only 502/505 VW approved. Is it still fine to use the oil for the next 5000k's before my 45k service?

I'm getting both sides of the argument. Some say its fine (though not the best), other say to dump the oil and do another oil change. Would it be ok to keep driving on this oil for 5000k's?

I would use the recommended 507 spec for the car as its made for that engine - the properties of the 502 spec oil are not made for your car but an older generation of VW engines.

If down the track you need to say top up the vehicle with oil the 502 would be ok (only as a top up in an emergency).

Saying the above though I would use the factory spec all the time, if it were my car & it was still under warranty.

Although I am not a VW mechanic, I wouldn't be too concerned about the oil that you used.

From memory the Castrol is SM/SN rated and if you are going to change the oil in 7000 km, use it as your daily driver and don't track it, then I would not be too concerned. 504/507 is designed for extended drain and particularly important if your car is a diesel with DPF.

If you are really worried then Repco have on sale Shell Helix for $50 are per the thread in this sub thread.

Gone are the days when almost any old oil would do.

It is very important to use the correct oil.

I couldn't agree more. Some then wonder, why their cam follower or other component had failed?

Always use the latest spec oil that's approved for your engine. Every car from MK5 onwards should use 504.00/507.00 , not just diesels.
