    Only 100,000kms? You lucky boy!!

Anything VW recommends, 500.00 spec I think. Fuchs SuperGTO 10w-30 will do just fine.

I'm using Fuchs Super GTO 10W-40 which seems to be pretty good. Actually when I check the oil it still seems to be oil colour instead of black

I changed the oil on the Bathurst weekend, so 07/10/2007, I now have to get some more as it's managed to burn off a little bit so it appears as 'low' on the dipstick. So thats 6 weeks from high to low... wonder how much oil that translates to in real life? I suppose I will find out very soon. But then these engines are known for drinking a little oil and up until about 1.5 weeks ago I did have a very minor leak.

And to add to that, go to VW (or import directly) to get the OEM oil filters made by Hengst as they are reported as being FAR better than anything aftermarket. Your also going to need a 36mm socket to get the filter housing out. It was hard for me to find one in Campbelltown unless I bought a $200 set of monster sockets, but I did end up finding one 1/2 inch drive socket for $35 from AutoOne. Check that you have one before you start otherwise you will be sitting in your driveway with no oil wondering WTF to do

Are you planning to do any fuel/air filters? Plugs? Leads?

This thread will soon turn into "what I use" not "best oil for VR6", after so many threads on this topic I realise everyone use different oils, all with good reponse. I suppose any syn oil is good. I use mobil 1 5w-40. No trouble...except I would want to try something thicker, due to a minor leak and having to top up every 1 1/2 month, I hope a thicker oil with reduce the toping up frequency. some one please clarify

It is a very subjective question, the best I think anyone could really hope for is to get peoples impressions of different oils... maybe it should be phrased "what oils should I avoid?"

Not sure what it was, but whatever Vintage VW used to use in my Type III would just about burn completly off by the time I drove home from their workshop, and no I'm not exaggerating.

As for a thicker oil, I'm also very interested in hearing the answer to that, although as I said, in my case it may be the little leak that has since been fixed that was causing my issues. Either way I'm always open to suggestions that will improve the running/maintenace costs for the VR6

I run a Penrite HPR10 in my car and it seems to be a pretty good oil for the vr6, i've run penrite oils in everyone of my other cars and have never had the oil breakdown on me like other "performance" oils.
