I just tried out the V-power Racing in the Passat...... disappointed to say the least $100 worth of fuel and i got 450km's out of the tank... what a rort!
Back to Synergy 8000 for me!
Yep BP Ultimate..!! Good stuff!
shell V power - crap...... Pinging (detonation) under load.. low rpm
Caltex Premium- extra double crap!! ...even fricken worse
Mobli 8000.. Better then the last 2...
Ampol... dont waist your time..
winner is BP.. in my books anyway....
Trying to find a servo that sells BP100... anyone know where in sydney? havent tried it yet..

this seems to be a trend in most of the "which fuel" threads u read on the internet. Shell runs like arse in some cars for some reason.
I only use BP unless im feeling lazy and fill up at the mobil next to work.
Over here we dont have much of a choice with premium fuels. BP U98 or Caltex Vortex. Have always used the BP and never had an issue. Great stuff.

Hmmmmmmmm......before I saw the light and got my Golf TDI, I had a Magna 3.5 with a few mods (chip, exhaust, ported & polished heads). My mechanic said much the same as what I've been reading in here - Mobil & BP both good, cars were coming in and had issues with Caltex and to a lesser extent Shell. Actually listed on my last service docket before I gave the car the flick to use Mobil Synergy 8000 where possible...I always thought petrol was petrol, but it would seem this isn't always so.
Caltex supply all the fuel to mobil petrol stations in sydney.
In Sydney all bp fuel except the 98 octane is shell fuel.
Shell v power 98 is the highest octane 98 fuel on the market and has the highest power density as well.
The higher the power density the more power per litre of fuel and if you dont leadfoot it then the more mileage per tank
I know this because I have seen it tested in the Mon/Ron engine also I have a high compression V8 with a lot of advance and this engine really lets you know what fuel its drinking.
I buy mobil as a last choice as there 98 is only just 98 octane where as the shell 98 is always more than 98 sometimes its basially 99 octane fuel plus the shell has the higher power density.
I never ever buy woolies fuel
The big petrol stations all ways have there own fuel ie a big shell has shell fuel. It can be a different thing in smaller stations. I bought some 95 octane from a small BP the other day and the car pinged its head off. so i was ripped off as it wasnt 95 at all.
One difference between the fuels is the additives they put in to clean deposits from the injectors. Each additive cleans certain things only so switching fuels after using only one brand for a long time can account for the sudden surge in performance as the new fuels different cleaning additives will clean out what the other hasnt.
I have been using the 98 octane ethanol fuel as it has a really good octane rating and its cheap . Its only draw back is it hasnt got the same power density because ethanol has a low power density than the hydrocarbons used in petrol. when I am plodding to work i allways use the ethanol blend but if Im going for a zoom or towing then in goes the V power.
having said all of the above if you have a low compression engine then it doesnt really natter what you put in it

Having run muliple fuels in multiple cars, from V8s, I6Ts, Polo ('99), Golf 2L, Jaguar X-type, e46 BMWs etc (i can go on)
Across all the readily available fuels, BP Ultimate is consisntely the best for power and smoothness. Economy seems comparable to any of the others.
Second choice would be Mobil 8000.
Optimax/V-power would be my last choice. Cant really vouch one way or the other for Caltex 98 as it's not widely available near where i live.
No great evidence, just multiple different cars running consistently better on Ultimate than any of the others.
I live 30 meters from a shell and fill up there regularily, since I live so close I buy fuel when its at its very cheapest and get 98'. Although I have tried V-power racing (don't laugh) on my GL, its alot better, peak or close to peak torque came in at abour 200-300 rpm less.
Although I have used BP and mobil 98 fuels, if they're 98, then shell must be 96-97 because there is a considerable difference in the fuels.
But yeah yet again price makes the biggest contribution, and being so close its hard to do otherwise.
