    Thanks Maverick. I dug into the Castrol site again and found a technical sheet on 5W/30. Buried on the last page is what I was looking for VW505.00.

    Why don't you get Castrol Power flow Professional formula 5W/30 from VW dealer? It is correct oil for your TDI.

    You could go to Mobil and get the mobil 1 formula ESP... it meets 504.00/507.00 which is probably what your manual stipulates...

    It stipulates Castrol.

    The VW owners manual stipulates Castrol? How strange when from what I can gather, first fill (in Skodas at least) is Shell Helix Ultra X LongLife (not sold in AUS). I can't see any reason why VAG would have different first fill contract for the different brands.

    Apart from that, there's no drama in mixing oils of the same specification - even the manual says that.

    Yes, my service booklet states Castrol. As for mixing oil, I wouldn't do it unless I had to top up urgently and I had no access to the Castrol oil. Even though the specs might be the same, there would be subtle differences.
