    New oil, large temperature variation?

    Hi all, had a service a couple of weeks ago & have noticed a larger than normal oil temp variation on a casual drive down the freeway. Normal variation would be 100 degrees +/- 2 degrees, but yesterday evening noticed 100 degrees +/- 6 degrees! This is sitting on 110 on the freeway, the temp would rise to 106 up a hill & drop to 94 down the other side.

    The service centre used the same oil as last time (supposedly), the approved Fuchs product. Would this be a characteristic of brand new oil? Haven't noticed this before...

    Seems all good now. I will put this down to a 'new oil' characteristic!

    Did the same thing driving Sydney to Kiama Saturday morning (95 - 105), but driving back to Newcastle tonight with around 500k's since the service, sat on 100 +/- 1 or 2 degrees the whole way.

    Hi MGV,

    Might it not be due to an active DPF regen cycle??

    MGV's car is a petrol Tiguan (2.0TSI).

    I've always thought that new oil needs to be "broken in". It usually takes 300-500km.

    Classic example was Subarus - new oil used to activate the knock sensor & retard the timing.

    Just on the subject of oil temperatures at what sort of temperatures are oils considered to be "overheated"? I'm specifically talking of Skoda 1.8 TSi running approved 505/507 type lubricant.

    It depends what aspect of the oil you are concerned about and the type / brand / base stock of oil.

    PAO based oil (Mobil1., AMSoil, etc) will take temps of 180c + without losing viscosity.

    Hydrocracked synthetics is more like 150c

    Thanks for that reference Brad. Useful info from a wonderfully drol presenter☺.
    My question was prompted after I was simply scrolling through the MFD as tootled along in the traffic the other day and saw as I recall 96 degrees displayed and the outside temperature was supposedly 20c. Just wondered what sort of temperature would be "normal" once we get 38 degree days and times I'm maybe giving it a wee bit of stick up the hills in RNP on my way out to Bundeena.😉

    I wouldn't be concerned unless you are exceeding 140c for extended periods.

    120 on a hot day is fairly common
