Mixing Oils - Can you and should you?

I've recently had the MkVI Cab (1.4 Twincharger) serviced and they have used Fuchs GT1 Pro C-3 5W-30 (which is VW 504/507). My concern now is that I'm about to drive interstate (for Nationals woooo!) but don't have any spare oil that I could use to top it up if and when it's needed (on a 2,000km round trip).

Bursons is where I've been told I can source some and there is one local to my house (assuming I can get there during business hours) so that's Plan A.

But the question, if I can get another VW504/507 rated oil is it OK to mix different brands? Is there any detriments to doing this?

edit: I'm not sure why you refer to 507 as that is a diesel specification.


Yes, mixing different brands / viscosity & specificationis fine. As a top-up you can even use 502.00 (you can even use that in a full oil change on fixed service intervals).

I have no knowledge of that Chief oil. I'd be more inclined to use a brand name in 502.00 than an unknown in 504.00.

Assuming you only want 1L (5l is heaps better value usually)

In order of preference:

Castrol Edge Engine Oil - 5W-30, 1 Litre - Supercheap Auto Australia

Nulon Full Synthetic Euro Engine Oil - 5W-30, 1 Litre - Supercheap Auto Australia

You can actually by Genuine top up oil at your local Volkswagen Dealer, the part number for top up oil is #GVW052195M2

Typo on my part, it should have said 504/507 spec, not just 507. Everything I see is compliant to both specs and not one or the other.

I'd be much happier with a name I know, so\o Penrite or Nulon, don't know how I missed those in my searching.

Ideally I won't be mixing brands, I'm just interested in what different oil chemistries might do together.

As for oil from VW, that's what I've always had before.

The Multivan was always serviced my VW and I've always carried a spare bottle of the VW branded stuff but never needed it, service intervals were pretty close with the number of KM's I was doing and the levels never seemed to drop.

The Cab has never really drunk any oil, but then it was never on any really long trips. The last run from Sydney to Melbourne saw it consume a little so I want to be prepared for the run from Melbourne to Sydney and back. I known I'm being anal about what will likely be only a little top up, but she's my baby and I want to take care of her

Although I absolutely concede there is a world of difference between "Recommended for and exceeds VW 504.00 petrol and 507.00 diesel specifications" and actual certification.

Yep, I would be putting Nulon at the very bottom of that list, simply based on their lack of desire to have it approved.

Supercheap currently offer 504/507-approved oil from Penrite, Castrol, Shell, and Valvoline.

There is a vast difference between a manufacturer saying they "Recommend" an oil and one which has been "Approved " Approved means it has been tested by VW at the sellers expense ( usually several thousand $).

Recommended just means the seller reckons it will be OK and wont pay the money to get it approved and still rake in the suckers.

Well, I won't need to find out, I've sorted some Fuchs (actually approved and all ) from Burson's so it's all good

I use Liqui Moly for my diesel polo, have from the first service. It is expensive $ 90 for 5 litres but good oil. Made for german made cars
