    Cool Which brand of diesel?

    Since becoming a veedub TDI phile and learning the general consensus of people on this forum that all diesel fuels aint equal, I decided to put a tank of BP Ultimate diesel in the old farm Toyota Hilux with a cattle crate permanently on its back. Its a 2.8 litre normally aspirated diesel which usually gets fed the cheapest around here,normal Caltex via a Woolies discount. The 2.8 diesel Hilux is well know for its lack of go and is probaly happier if you don't push it over about 90 k unless you have a tail wind.
    And ,hey, it actually feels faster and punchier, seemed happier when wound up to 100-don't think there was a tailwind!

    Anymore feedback other users may have on this subject would be greatly appreciated.

    I am picking up my new TDI next week [Fingers crossed] and only have the option of Caltex Vortex Diesel or normal diesel at each of the standard options [Shell, BP, Caltex, Mobil].

    Recommendations? Does anyone know if the Vortex Diesel or other performance diesels have a positive or negative effect on the DPF issues?

    Caltex Vortex is highly recommended, virtually as good as BP. Shell doesn't have a premium diesel, but it should still be heads and shoulders over the Woolies and no name servos for consistency. Premium diesels have higher cetane numbers, but this does not correspond to premium petrol in normal cars, which can advance or retard timing to suit, a diesel goes bang when the fuel is injected. The main thing is consistency, low chance of water or the dreaded algae, and the fact they have cleaners added to help keep injectors at their peak. It's these latter cleaners I would attribute the Hilux difference mainly to. Interesting test all the same!

    I agree with Greg, stay away from the cheap servos, one dose of crap fuel and it could see the end of the engine. I have had my GT TDI since new and it has only ever been fed either Shell or on occasions when I'm near a BP servo I'll fill up with BP. I have used a Cetane boost additive but IMHO it made little or no noticeable difference to performance or economy. William congrats on the purchase and welcome to the Darker side (Diesel / Oilers) hopefully VW will have dealt with some of the issues which have and are still affecting some earlier model TDI's.     I use only BP in Adelaide it is probably the best fuel. The cleaning additives added to the diesel fuel by oil companies could be well used up once they go in the underground tanks and clean those first, that's why I always use additive with every fuel up. When buying diesel fuel additive make sure you get the one that is suitable for CRD, some diesel additives will brake down under the pressure in CR hi-pressure pump and will do no cleaning in the injectors.

    Any particular recomendations for CRD compatible products ?

    Thanks for that - just went to see if what is in the shed was CRD specific - chemtec has no mention CRD on the bottle.

    Chemtech make the additives Diesel Power and Petrol Power (repectively) not a bad product IMO but doesn't seem to have much of an affect on the newer diesel engines as it does or did on an older Hilux diesel I used to own.
