Auto Trans Fluid and other fluid questions

Hi, just wondering if the ATF in a 1999 MK4 Golf 1.6L 4 speed auto could be replaced with an aftermarket fluid. For example redline or similar. Also wondering if anyone has used penrite ENVIRO+ 5W-30 in this engine before. Thanks regards Tom.

I wouldn't use aftermarket ATF in your car (use VW fluid only), but you can use Enviro+5W30 or if the engine is burning oil and you have to top up a lot you could consider Enviro+5W40 (however it is not VW approved oil. Enviro+5W30 is).

If you have the 4-speed 01M gearbox, then here are the part numbers for VW ATF:

    G 052 162 A1 (0.5 L)
    G 052 162 A2 (1 L)
    G 052 162 A6 (20 L)

The internet says that Esso ATF LT 71141 (now replaced by Mobil ATF LT 71141) is what's actually in those bottles, so if the dealer's prices are exorbitant, buy directly from Mobil instead (20 L container). You'll need to send them an email to locate the nearest distributor in your state, as it's not available in retail shops.

As for your engine, you can use Penrite Enviro+ 5W-30 as it's a VW 504 oil, which supersedes VW 502. If the car has used 30-weight oils for most of its 12 year life, there shouldn't be any issues. But if it ends up being too light and starts to burn it, you may need use a 40-weight oil instead (click here for more info).

As long as you use a specially designed OEM/replacement ATF you should be fine. Viaco/Veirol make them all (hsy autoparts), Febi Bilstiein make it too, as well as a 6SPD DSG fluid..

I've heard of some DSG and tiptronic failures recently, but a lot of the reports i hear are coming from backyard 'mechanics' or your kmart auto/automasters type workshops putting crap/wrong ATF in. Then of course they bag the new vw's for having weak gearboxes...

So, you dont HAVE to buy it from the dealer as there are wholesalers out there selling OEM replacement stuff, just with a different sticker on the bottle.
