Having a diesel now I'm wondering where I should fill up, or does it really not matter because diesel?
Depends on how modern your diesel is. Older cars are less picky, as their injection pressures were lower. The very latest common rail diesels are very prone to fuel related problems, for sure it is a small chance overall, but the newer the engine, the more important I feel it is to run a name brand diesel. Of those BP and Caltex are the best as they have added fuel cleaners to keep the injectors healthy, then Shell would be my choice.
