    First service

It happens on Thurs 22nd. I chose John Hall who is a local guy and has a registered VAG service centre. Don't care if he's cheaper or more expensive than the "big end of town" 'cos I'll always support the small guy... As long as he knows what he's doing

    Snap!

Yeah.. I posted exactly the same article form TDI club and got some interesting replies.

I used a mixture of the TDI post's recommendations, my own experience and common sense. I've never overworked the engine until the oil achieved full operating temp and then made sure I gave it a balance of hard pulling and hard engine braking going down hills. I absolutely avoided constant engine speeds, often changing up and down the 'box while travelling at a constant road speed. Because diesels are combustion/ignition engines, well bedded rings and avoiding cylinder wall glazing are crucial to long engine life. My TDI is very young at 7500km and I'm still observing running in procedures. I probably will be for some time yet

My dealer uses mobil. I asked the service adviser what grade of oil do they use. He pulled out his little black book & said Mobil 1. I replied that I didn't think it complied. He said if it didn't they wouldn't be using it.
I was driving past another day & I thought I would ask someone in the service bay. Well they were all at lunch so being cheeky I walked in & read the marking on the 200ltr drum. It read mobil ESP. What a relief. I had my car serviced recently & was worried that they had used the wrong oil.
Now the service adviser is new with no previous VW experience I am told. I remember talking to the previous guy & he had told me that Mobil 1 was OK to use just to top up to get you through to the next service.
Now the new guy is quoting mobil 1 as the oil to use for a full oil change.
From my experience it's not too hard to see what will happen to these engines if the authorized dealer can't quote the correct oil.
I am glad I bought a new TDI where I can make sure the correct oil goes in.

    Cool Golf V TDi 45000kms

My MY05 Golf V TDi has showed all the classic signs
    - oil light came on at 7500kms - took it to nearest dealer (was on road trip) and they topped it up for free on the spot with the same as original oil
    - oil light came on again at 30000kms - again took it to dealer (again on road trip) and they again topped up for free on the spot
    - now almost due for 45000km service - never seen the oil light since 30000

I must say that the engine continues to improve more and more as the kms clock up - it is now soooooo loose and free-running - just feels better and better - drives incredibly well when pushed hard and uses hardly any fuel

Recent very enthusiastic burn through the sunshine coast hinterland averaged over 100kmh and 6.6l/100k on the clock but actually 6.25 at the pump..... unbelievable!!! and even impressed re-mapped GTi driver mate in handling (sportline) and speed and then knocked his jocks off when we did a comparative re-fill (he needed to, I was still close to 3.4 full )

To all people interested in TDi PD engine oils discussion.

Please note, that some posts here refer to "erwin manual" for which oils are factory approved. I think it is important to be sure that the oil you buy from your local parts store is VW factory approved and not just recommended by the brand which is on the container you buy oil in.

I'm not quaite sure that "Penrite HPR5 Diesel" for example is approved by VW factory.
Please note: "Recommended for VW 506.01".
    Q. By Whom?
    A. Penrite.

I can see a problem there if your engine fail within the warranty period.

I buy Castrol TXT Longlife 2 from the dealer and keep the invoice.

    Hoyhoy.

My daugther & her girl friend, both recently purchased mkv TDI's in black, now the problem is that both are using oil at a fare rate. Today my daughter was told by the service manager to expect to use 1lit./ 1000km. To me this doesn't sound right.
    Hooroo.

    Moved thread and oil consumption

OK I moved this thread to the new fuels and lubricants forum.

My TDI used no oil right up to the 7500km service. At first this worried me, as I know from past experience that new or recon motors use oil until the oils rings bed in and I had read that I should expect > normal oil consumption when this motor is young. Upon reflection however, this verifies the running in technique that I used. If I had "got it wrong" I would expect to see some oil consumption. At 11,000km it's way too early to make any statement about compression, however I don't believe that this will be a problem in years to come. I reckon that taking it easy until the oil gets hot, hard pulling and hard deceleration (occasionally but not all of the time) and not sustaining the same revs for any period of time gives the rings their best chance to bed in. Check in with me in 5 or 6 years time and we'll see if this is right (if I'm still alive or able to drive at the time )

    TDI Oil Consumption

I have now done 6700 Km in our 2007 VW Caddy and used no oil!

I am running in the engine as suggested by Brackie.

When I sent an e-mail to VW Australia asking which oil is suitable for topping up purposes they stated that fully synthetic oil 0W-30 or 5W-30 is fine but not for servicing.
For servicing you must use 507.00 ( or 507.01) or 506.01 Castrol oil.

    attached is VW reponse

    response 1

Thank you for contacting us through the Volkswagen Australia Website, we appreciate it.

In response to your email enquiry, I can advise you that the correct engine oil for vehicle is Volkswagen 504.00/501.01. Any oil used in the engine therefore must meet with these specifications. Depending on the oil manufacturer as to which one of their oils meet this specification the oil may be either 0w-30 or 5w-30 and must be fully synthetic. The engine oil for use in this vehicle is the same or similar to that as used in some of our high performance petrol engines and as such Diesel engine oil may not be suitable. I would suggest contacting the individual engine oil manufacturers to ascertain which of their oils they recommend to use to meet this specification. Alternatively your dealership would be able to assist you further with the purchasing of engine oil.

reponse 2 after I mentioned that my Golf is diesel

The correct oil viscosity of the 2.0L Tdi golf is 5W30. Please note we supply this grade of oil purely for the convenience of the customer in the case that the VW oil is unable to be obtained. If you are replacing the oil then it must be replaced with the genuine oil only. If it is found that any component has failed due to the incorrect oil being used that part may not be covered under the vehicles warranty .

    Regards

    Adam
