Hi all ,my passat 2.0 petrol is up for service and i would usually take it to a garage but this time is only a oil change and was thinking of doing it myself to save a bit of money .so my question is is it easy to do ,any special tools needed or things to look for ??

You'll need a 36mm socket to get the oil filter out.
You'll also need:
- T-20 and T-45 sockets or screwdrivers for the plastic splash pan
- 6mm hex key to remove the plug to drain the oil from the filter housing before removing the cap if you want to stay cleaner
- Also ideally a torque wrench to accurately torque the oil filter to 25Nm and the sump plug to 30Nm.

Slight correct to the above:
T25 and T45, if it runs a full undertray.
No 6mm on the oil filter housing, just a small cap you can unscrew by hand with a red drain valve behind it that you can push up and to the side with a screw driver to drain the housing, before using the 36mm socket to undo the housing.
Replace the sump plug with a new one. Will come with it's own captive washer, and they're only $4.50 from VW. Cheaper than replacing the sump.
Or drop me a PM and i can do it for you

Snail Style, as per above.
Pretty sure the thermostat is buried behind the alternator bracket, etc.
