    Hi debbie,
if that car would be mine I'd go to the dealer and complained about the oil consumption let them do the excessive oil consumption test, that way it would be documented, if later there is more problems with the engine because of that.

Yeah and get the record of it, if you go in.

I hadnt checked the oil at that time and no light had come on.

we didnt get to 15,000 as the oil light came on at 12656 and we had to add 1ltr of oil to the car.We took it back then Iasked the VW service centre if it was normal for this to happen and was told that its normal oil use .

we are roughly putting in 1ltr per 3,000 km city driving and they are still telling us its normal consumption because its turbo petrol.

    No oil leaks at all.
i dont know if the fact thats its turbo petrol should make a difference. I had a focus XR5 turbo for two years from new and never used a drop. My current v6 highline has almost 6k on it and again no oil top up required. However, i was told that it was normal with VW to need top ups and to simply swing by the service dept and they would take care of it at no cost. I am no mechanic but 1 lt every 3k soulnds like there is a problem.

My brothers Golf GTi has had to have the oil filled up, with warning light, on 4-5 different times since I bought it for him. The car is around 1.5 years old now.

I have told VW about it and they always tell me its normal for GTi to use this much oil?? Its not leaking cause ground is clear wherever the car is kept.

My EOS and Passat have same engine and they have never had the oil warning light come on though..

are you able to speak to another service centre about this?
I mean, as a competitor to your normal service centre, they should be keen to point out what they're doing (as you mentioned you don't know what they're doing in the back of the shop)
You should be able to get some honest tips, if they want to earn your business

We did what Debbie is wanting to do already. They topped it up then told him to use it for 1000km and bring it back for a check. They said it went down a bit but seemed normal

    Debbie,

You should check the oil level before you take it in for checking by your dealer, and afterwards, that way you will have a pretty good idea of how much your engine used and what they added while "in the back".

IMO VW's claim that using up to 1 litre per 1,000Km is "normal" is just so they can deny there is a problem when there is one. I wonder if a car that is burning that much oil would pass a strict emission test.

I've never had a car that wasn't severely worn use even 250 ml per 1,000Km. My last car (Laser TX3 DOHC) didn't use much oil at all, even after 190,000Km, and neither of my current vehicles use much either (I never have to add any between oil changes).

The other thing to remember is just because a lot of VWs use excessive amounts of oil doesn't mean that they are 100% OK mechanically.

In other words all these engines that use excessive amounts of oil probably all have the same fault: rings that aren't scraping the oil off the cylinders properly so too much oil is getting into the combustion chamber and being burnt.

So when they tell you "That is normal, they all do that" you can reply "No, not ALL of them do it, only some, and it is NOT acceptable".
