VW Touareg - rough start- 2017 V6 Tdi

Hi There,

I have noticed an issue with my 2017 TDI V6 Touareg at start-up, which has a very rough idle and started to shake.
I have only started noticing this at a cold start. I scanned the car without any indications or clues from the sensor readings. Could someone point me in the right direction regarding what I should look at?

These engines suffer quite badly with carbon buildup (due to the EGR system) in the intake pipes and intake manifold which is well known to cause hesitation and stuttering when the engine is cold and/or light throttle.

Id say there is a fair chance that this is the issue you are experiencing.

Its the same case with the V6 TDI in my Audi SQ5 which shares some similarities with engine design to your car. My car has 95,000km and ive cleaned it 3x times as well as fitting a catch can which has helped slow the issue down.

You can remove the parts yourself and clean with carby cleaner but its a messy job, otherwise you can have the service done by a mechanic but obviously you will pay handsomely for it.

Some of the bolts are a bit tricky to get to and you will need some extensions to get at some of the others, but its definitely DIY'able if you have the right tools and are willing to give it a go.

I tried all sorts of cleaning products, from petrol, to dedicated EGR cleaners and found this Nulon carby cleaner to be the best to dissolve the muck. Also buy yourself a couple of medium/stiff bristled toothbrushes to use to agitate the cleaner. Nulon Pro Strength Throttle Body & Carby Cleaner 400g | Supercheap Auto
