    V6 TDI Turbo failure

A couple of lights came up on the dash the other day (including take to dealer) when I started up the VW, so it was trucked over to our dealer. Just received a call from the service guy saying it looks like the wastagate on the turbo has stuck open and we may be up for a new turbo (circa $4,000). The car has only done 80,000 km and I am horrified that this could fail. Has anyone else had this happen or any suggestions - it is 4 years old.

Oh yes, and BTW the air suspension has also started playng up - sinking on one corner and that looks like a $1400 fix (new distribution block)!

What's the service history like? (VW stamps all through the book)

    Are you the original owner?

If the above applies, push for assistance from VW.

I wouldn't expect the turbo to last only 80,000km and would be looking for some other faults as well.

If it's only the wastegate regulator they shouldn't replace the whole turbo and if they can't replace the wastegate reg.because of the lack of space, then tehy shouldn't charge for the whole turbo, because they can repair it off the car and use it second time. Unless they don't care about the environment at all.

It would be good, if you could get an independent opinion and scan with VCDS for the fault codes, before they strated on it. I know, it's not always possible.

Anyway, wish you luck and your car back soon.

    Edit:
Regardless where it was serviced, as long as it was serviced properly, I would be pushing it to get it repaired under the statutory warranty. The componnents shouldn't fail that soon. One of my customer get his turbo in 1.9TDI Octavia replaced when it was a few months out of warranty and from 10,000km right up to 120,000km he had only my stamps in the service book.

Maybe this was overlooked when they serviced it? http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/foru...tml#post749857

Hope you can get this sorted, but if not I reckon I can find you a replacement OEM turbo for considerably less (possibly a 5th of what VWA are quoting you). Same with the Air Suspension Module, possibly.

Having dealer stamps in the book means everything to VW when it comes to out-of-warranty help. It's a difficult pill to swallow, but I see where they're coming from.

As for the turbo, it may be a case of not being able to purchase the wastegate module separately.

Guys, thanks for your thoughts and support. The car has been exclusively serviced by a VW dealer at the recommended intervals. The EGR failed last Christmas and that was replaced with a portion paid for by VW. I am wondering if the issues are related. I am so saddened the car has proved to be unreliable.

Any further suggestions welcomed. Source for OEM parts? I have ordered an ETKA catalogue off ebay so I at least know the part numbers. Geoff

Not all the turbo components are listed separately in ETKA. I got a wastegate actuator from ECStuning, it has an audi part number but isn't in ETKA.

This could be why they are trying to hit you up for $4K.
