V10 v V6 diesel fuel consumption

I tow a 18' Bushtracker van which is over 3 tonnes when loaded up, With the V10 I get about 16l at a reasonable cruising speed - 80-90. Without the van on the highway I get around 9.5 cruising at 100-110.
Best towing vehicle around - only reason to change it would be for a longer wheelbase for bigger vans to cut down the pitching effect.
Overall the V10 is hard to beat - one Nissan, 3 Land cruisers and a RR for experience!

HI guys, thanks for the info. Got anaother issue you might help with. Had test drive of steel suspension V6 and was not impressed with off road ability at all. Is air suspension on V10 better. V6 had very limited wheel travel and picked up wheels everywhere + bellied out really easily. I have a 4,5l petrol patrol at the moment and it leaves the V6 for dead climbing bumpy grassy slopes at least partly due to tyres of course but with all the gadgetry I was expecting way better from the V6. Any thing to share? Ta, John

You can get air suspension as an option on the V6, whereas it's standard on the V10.

The electronics on the Touareg are second to none, but cannot overcome tyres with no grip. Comparing to the Patrol off-road is never going to give you satisfaction, until you have the identical tyres. Even then you will never have the articulation of 2 solid axles, or the rampover, but on the flipside you will never have the shocking Patrol on-road handling or the thirst of the big petrol.

Not keen on the Patrol 3.0TD ???? Can't imagine why

I actually debated the steel vs air springs a lot before opting for the air suspension on my TDV6. Why? Although it is an expensive option it gives phenominal ground clearance when you need it PLUS it is self levelling - something you really appreciate if ever you tow a big trailer.

As I had memories of Land Rover air suspensions failing in the most inconvenient of places I Googled everywhere to see if I could find evidence of failures in ether the Touareg or Porsche Cayenne air suspensions and could find barely a comment. Thus reassured I chose the air suspension. The bonus being you also get the superb bi-xenon light setup.

Gerhard is right - for the really rough stuff you need better than the road tyres supplied. I have fitted a Scoprion ATR (245/65/17) to my spare rim and will replace the other four when they wear down a bit. By then we will be heading off outback after a 10 year break, confident the Touareg will easily go to the places we visited in our Range Rovers.

PS If you like a car with firm handling set the air suspension to "sport". For badly rutted dirt set to "auto" or "comfort"

They are a joy to drive, aren’t they? What I like about Treg is that it doesn’t feel like you’re driving a heavy car at all. The maneuverability and the brakes feel as good as on Golf5.
I know you didn’t buy it for fuel economy me neither but what is you fuel consumption in the city? Ours is between 10 and 11L/100km driving mostly in the morning and afternoon pick hours traffic, calculated from the fuel docket.

Hi Transporter, i have some posts on clubtouareg re fuel but briefly, so far in the 'suburban' traffic of the Sunshine Coast which is nothing like capital city traffic, short trips 12-13l/100k. Mix in some motorway stuff once the motor has warmed up and it averages 10.5 - 11l. On a trip to Brisbane just after evening peak the highway part got down to 9.7 and the return trip including suburban brisbane was 10.8l/100k by memory.
Fuel economy when towing was a big factor as I intend to tow about 3,5t (boat when I can afford one) and although the V6 diesel is quite pokie I felt with the load behind it would seriously start to drink fuel. I have just lost a 4.5l GU Patrol -petrol- and it's fuel economy around town was 19 - 23l and when I put a decent size trailer with load behind it it could drink up to 28l every 100k which isn't all that pleasant.
The R50 is a seriously wicked piece of gear and looking forward to getting some other wheels and tyres for a serious bit of off road work although with the limited wheel articulation from seriously stiff sway bars I think there will be the odd frustration even with all the electronic traction stuff.
Re: keeping my licence, my mates have taking bets on how long it;ll take before the flashing blue lights or those sneaky little candid cameras take an interest. i'm trying to be good but it's hard!!!!! ......SOOOO HARD

if you wanted to do offroading mate you should have got the run of the mill V10

R50 having fun off road last weekend.
The owner has made a few modifications but nothing to take the on road feel away. Mainly a set of off road 20" rubber/wheels and some underbody protection.

HI Flipper Dog, good lookin' bit of gear you have. The 20'' rubber works ok? I was thinking of going to 19" or 18" if they fit to give more sidewall height (and flex) over dodgey terrain and to give bag when deflated in soft sand. Which tyres are on your 20's and do you carry a spare? Do you still use the 21's on the tar?
