Snapped these pics Easter 2005 at our local VW dealer. According to the map on the car, it was not supposed to come to Adelaide.

Looking at the map it seems Adelaide will miss out. It does however suggest an interesting African experience! Maybe they'll just keep on turning right only to disappear up their own exhaust pipe![]()
This is interesting - I had heard of this project, but didn't know where they were up to. Actually, I think they are finished, and this vehicle must have come back here after going home to Germany! Looking at the pictures support my theory that if VW want to do something a bit interesting, they pick the "poverty pack" Touareg ie the R5 TDI. I think it might be greater commonality of parts with more commonly available VWs (ie T5), as well as less to go wrong with a simpler vehicle. It will also run on fairly ordinary fuel...
Note that it has 16 inch steel wheels - do these look like what you would find on a T5? Also interesting that they include the letters "R5" before the "TDI" on the tailgate. The marketing dept must have told them not to do that here, because they don't do it on ours.
Anyway, thanks for the snap!

Check out the Snorkel!!
I a little surprised that VW don't have a snorkel, but then they don't have a bull bar, driving lights or much in the way of off road accessories.
I've not looked under the bonnet, but it seems odd that the air intake needs to be so far forward.
I like the rough n ready look of everything else (especially the steel wheels and tyres), BUT that's one ugly agricultural looking snorkel, haven't seen one of those since the early 8ties on farm 40 series landcruisers. I'd hide my head in shame driving from brisbane to ipswich let alone around the world
Cheers
