Probably a design feature to make sure you never run out of fuel.

Yeah, our MY06 is the same. Really annoying actually. You think you're getting low, so you fill up when the warning appears. Never managed to get more than 85 litres in either.

The latest I re-fuel is 1/4 of the tank, it is really not worth to run out of the diesel, most likely you will need mechanic to bleed the air out of the fuel system.![]()

Last fill was 94 ltrs with MFD staying I had 20km left.
I notice it gives you a early warning to refill but as you drive it around the readout becomes better.

You get the warning when there is 1/8 of a tank left. This was always around 180-200km left until empty for my R5.
warning with 1/8 tank left is standard (AFAIK) on VW's and Audis. Just imagine the same vehicle, your lovely Touareg, powered by the massive W12 Petrol instead of your frugal diesel. If he got 480km to the tank, 1/8 would be only 60km to go.
BTW these diesels will self-bleed if you do run out. I once had to change a fuel filter by the side of the road and just repeatedly turned the key to ON to initiate the fuel-pump pressurise feature. Every so often I'd turn all the way to "start" until the engine fired.
cheers
