Most of these so called quality problems are usually very minor as mentioned in the article.

Electronic malfunctions & rattles are the biggest complaint

On the manufacturering side of things I don't think it can be directly pinpointed to one factory

I do agree that the quality of VWs can be a little variable, even on cars coming from the same factory..

    Take this thread for example:

Fortunately, I got lucky with my car. Unfortunately, that luck didn't extend to yesterday's Powerball

I have to say that we've had a fair few faults with our car.
Here's a list of fault that had to be rectified by the dealer over a 12 month period.

Driver's window reversing randomly when auto up triggered - lubed twice, motor eventually changed
Suspension strut mounts squeaking - greased up twice
EPC warning light - ECU changed
Air bag warning light - Driver's side airbag changed
Rear demister middle lines not working - window changed, rear spoiler repaired after being damaged with window removal
Sunroof rattling - tracks loose and adjusted
Heated front seats work intermittently - to be fixed
Climatronic will sometimes go full hot for some reason - dealer can't find problem.

    Thats real bad luck

I think we need USAs Lemon Laws sometimes

I hope you did not pay too much in repairs GMC.

All repairs were performed as warranty jobs. The only bad thing was being without the car for 4 days when they stuffed up the rear window replacement. The paint shop had 2 goes at painting and re-aligning the spoiler.
