    Volkswagen Golf R20 with 270hp

Volkswagen Golf R20 with 270hp Reportedly Heading Stateside

With the Volkswagen R32 only boasting 250 horsepower, it seems the company's hot hatch is starting to cool off in light of newer offering by competitors but VW will soon rectify the situation by bringing the Golf R20 to the United States.

Unlike today's R32, the new R20 will feature Volkswagen's 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with direct injection which will be tuned to produce 270 horsepower. This should enable the R20 to post a 0-60 mph time in the low to mid five second range and reach an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph.

The exterior will carry over many of the new GTI's styling traits but should also include more aggressive front and rear ends and a center mounted dual exhaust. Initially the R20 will be offered only in three-door hatchback form but a five-door model could eventually be offered down the road.

Volkswagen will officially debut the new Golf R20 on May 21 at the ADAC 24-hour race at Germany's Nürburgring racing circuit and European sales will start later this year.

So I don't exactly understand why they would bring out a GTI and then and R32 and then a R20 with more HP than both. It's almost like VW are trying to make the GTI's reputation from being the flagship to the Now, 3rd best Golf

In the Golf VI range the R32 is discontinued so the R20 (i'm guessing this is the decided name for the rumoured GTI-R) will be the new flagship with the GTI sitting under that. Same as it's been since MK3's with a V6 model over the GTI, except we did not get a GTI MK3 here.

I will be devastated if it is actually FWD. I wouldn't think it would be "too expensive" to make it AWD (well, 4-motion) as they have the platform already is use by the S3.

Perhaps this is a part of VAG's marketing strategy to differentiate Audi and VW therby enabling them to maintain the premium price of the Audi brand. If the VW product was mechanically identical to the Audi, the difference would be limited to styling and a badge, potential S3 owners may then decide to buy a VW eqivalent and save thousands. Essentially the choice becomes if you want big horsepower and 4 motion you are steered into the Audi product.

    Cheers
