XR4, never heard of it before now. It does look like an interesting little beastie.

    Polo GTi @ $26,990:
    Weight: 1190kg
    Max power, kW @ rpm 110 @ 5800
    Max torque, Nm @ rpm 220 @ 1950
    7.9L/100km

    XR4 Fiesta @ $24,990:
    Weight: 1090kg
    Power: 110kW @ 6000rpm
    Torque: 190Nm @ 4500rpm
    7.4L/100km

For power, weight, and fuel they are pretty damn close. Mind you VW do it with a 1.8L vs Fords 2.0L.... you have to wonder what VW can get out if they used a 2.0L?

I think for most people it will come down to personal preference of what they like. Some people are just insa... errrm, I mean Ford people.

All that aside, what would you prefer? A Volkswagen Polo GTi or a Ford XR4 Fiesta?

Sorry, but you lost me at Fiesta? Just doesn't sound like a powerful vehicle? Why didn't they just call it the Ford Pansy XR4?

I Wouldn't pay it out too much.
And the capacity comment is silly - Are you forgetting the 1.8 has a turbo strapped to it?

Apparently the fiesta is the best handling hot hatch available at the moment.

Ahhh, as you can see my knowledge of Polo is very slim. I missed the whole turbo part in the spec sheet

Sure that adds insurance concerns as well as P plate driver concerns (at least in NSW) to the Polo. Something that may be an issue if you intend the car to be driven by a child or someone in one of those categories.

Crazy that of two pretty comparable cars a P plater couldn't drive the Polo because of the Turbo? But they can drive a V6 Commodore no problems?

Don't get me wrong it looks like a nice little unit and goes well to boot, just the name seems wussy, although the XR4 part makes up for it a little.

Actually, the XR4 name is unique to Australia. Ford Europe (where we get our the hot Focus and Fiesta from) label their sports models "ST" - the only reason why it's different here is to tie in with the local XR6 and XR8 nameplates which already have a lot of traction in the Australian marketplace.

This also goes a long way to explaining why the quick Mondeo that was sold here a few years back was called the "ST220".

hmmm. i had heard whispers of the xr4 when i was in the market to buy my polo. so roughly 1.5 years ago. I was extremely interested. But having siad that, i wanted a turbo car as i have been into NA cars since i was driving and didnt want to rev the crap out of my car anymore just to drive. That would have been the only thing holding me back. But the price is pretty appealing. is an interesting alternative.
