DSLR's are good value for car shots. Depending on the budget there are a host of camera's that will perform very well.

Currently the best camera for movement shots under $1k would have to be either the Nikon D40x or the Canon 400D. Under $2k the Canon 40D. For under $3k I would go a Nikon D300. Pentax / Sony / Panasonic / Olympus / Samsung just don't cut it really, Leica is to expensive

Had a play with the new Nikon D3 the other day, very very very nice but for over $7k it should be.

A hot tip for a movement shots.

Use 2 cars. Car 1 is the car that you want the shot. Car 2 is the car taking the pic, person in the passenger seat does it. Make Car 2 lead and fire the camera back toward Car 1. Use a shutter quicker than 1/125 but no faster than 1/250 so as to keep blur in the wheels. When in "S" or "Tv" the camera will automatically expose the aperture for you to get the correct exposure. This combined with a smallish 18-50mm of zoom will mean that the depth of field on a bright day should be large as well ( slow shutter will mean small aperture ). If possible on the DSLR use a Tamron 11-18 / 14mm or Sigma 10-20 / 12-14 or Canon 10-22 or Nikon 12-24 as this will mean you will get a really wide ( 100deg+ ) shot and even at close range the image will have depth. It also means that the shot will include the driver as that is the side he will be on. Doing this also works well for videoing a car.

that was a great write up and thanks for posting it!
i have been playing around with rolling shots many times before but i had been flying blind and so i just did what i thought would work.
im not shy about hanging my 40D out of the window or in the case of the rolling shots of my GTI getting my whole upper body out of the sunroof of my sisters GTI (which i must add i got my shoulders stuck a few times) for a good shot. besides im holding onto it like death.

im really keen to go out and have another go now. in the mean time these are what i have attempted...
