Diesel is dead, says Lexus chief
Interested to hear your thoughts.
In my mind the Head of Lexus Australia is as narrow minded as the Federal Liberal party leader is.

Oh you did not just!
And I even commented on the article myself. In the short term diesel hybrids are where it should be because hybrids shine in town and diesels shine in the country, in the long term I think that hydrogen should really come into force, unless they sort out the range problems for electric cars. I look forward to the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4 when it comes out here in December. Toyota's lack of eagerness towards diesel in passenger cars makes me happy because I know that a diesel engine would add many more Corolla snotbox sales. Having said that, I went for a ride in a Lexus CT200h last weekend (the new hatchback based on the Prius/Corolla platform) and I was suitably impressed. The drivetrain wasn't that good as you had to absolutely cane it to get anything out of it (CVTs ) but the interior is just lovely and it has so much more character than a Golf. And the best thing is, it's cheaper and MUCH nicer than a Prius!

I think what you will find is there will be less players overall, as meeting Euro 6 is no simple task, for instance it's rumoured that caterpillar is pulling out of offering Euro6 vehicles and sticking to off road after next year, but it's still a rumor. There are some amazing diesel / alternate fuel engines in development, and I don't doubt the diesel will change somewhat from it's current form, but autoignition will be around for some time yet. Sounds like Lexus marketing spin to me.

Yeah, that is from Toyota, the ultimate experts in Diesel tech... Ha ha ha! As if we are going to have hybrid road trains any time soon, or Lexus hybrid graders building new freeways. I wonder how many still believe in the Prius scam...
???
CVTs get the most out of an engine as it can run continuously at its torque or power peak (depending on what you are trying to achieve) to get the optimal efficiency or performance from the engine while gearing adjusts for the spped/acceleration required. I love them.
Of course if the PROGRAMMING is poor, then you don't get this optimal result but that applies to any auto, not just CVTs.
Also, I'm surprised that the CT 200H has more character than a Golf. Granted, the MkVI seems a pretty cold, efficient, capable vehicle but past Lexus vehicles haven't been exactly renowned for character.
When are the mods going to combine the 2 threads?
