    Citigolf---old news for some?

    Hey people,

    I was talking to a guy at work who has just come over from South Africa. He's a VW fan and mentioned (to my surprise) that a variant of the MK1 is still being sold over there. Man, it's awesome.

    yep its pretty cool aye. shame they're all 4dr models.

    Look at the dash especially. Imagine how good that would look in a 2 door ......

    Won't be able to do an import as I'm sure it doesn't meet ADR regulations for a new car.

    Check the price, factor in shipping and mods to get it ADR compliant and it's still not a bad little vehicle

    Converted from SA Rand to AU Dollar and it's $13,376.55 inc VAT which you may or not actually have to pay for the CitiRox 1.6i with Metallic paint and CD player. (ie all the options)

    I know nothing about what taxes you would be hit with coming into the country, but assuming 20% your still only at $16,051.86 + shipping.

    I do wonder what you would need to get ADR on it though... Considering it's based on the Mk1 I assume it's not a bad car, but I would guess it wouldn't pass the standards for a "new" car. CO2 output is good, brakes are good... it has lights and seatbelts, but no Air Bags (which I think are now compulsory).

    Plan B: Import one, then accidentally make the compliance plate from a 1979 4dr fall onto it

    Plan C: would be to import them whole then strip all the parts and put them onto a Mk1 shell, lots more work but at least it would be more legal... I wonder what it would cost to import one with a damaged shell but recoverable engine and interior...

    The Citigolf was launched at the end of 1984,when VW launched the more expensive and bigger Golf 2.
    It has been well marketed,and very popular,selling to all the car hire fleets.
    The Jetta 1 was also sold for a while as the Fox.
    When the Jetta 3 was launched,the Jetta 2 was sold for a while as the CL model,and was exported to China in volume.
