There is a hell of a lot more trim/wiring/auxiliaries etc in a GTI-R than a MK1. I reckon once both have been stripped out that gap would significantly decrease.
But yeah RB26 would be tough to get in....it's just that the engine bay is pretty damn big for the size of the car, thought it would be a possibility. They're getting RB's into S13's pretty easy these days (I'm helping a mate out with one at the moment), and the engine bay in one of them is far from huge. I suppose the SR20 is a pretty damn good engine anyway, capable of reliable huge numbers.
spoken like a true enthusiast, well played sir. I would however, heavily argue the point that $120,000 spent on both cars (including cost of car in that figure) would see a GTI-R easily clear the MK1 in straight line and track. Just my opinion anyway, I've been around Jap imports my whole life. Also, you can get a mildly modded GTI-R good for a 0-100 5sec pass for around the $10K these days. More mods and really clean examples are around $14-$15k. There's not much over that.
Didn't realise that sorry, I thought it was amazing how much traction it got for what I thought was FWD.
Cheers.

Don't get me wrong, I reckon you could do it too with an SR stroker and a big huffer...amongst other things. I own an almost DET'd pulsar myself hehe. A mate has stripped his B13 NX which is very similar to the N14 chassis and managed to get it down to just a peep under 1tonne from 1165kg stock. Nothing but a seat, dash, steering wheel, FWD rolling chassis and engine/driveline. Sound deadening, heater, I think even lights have been removed to get there! GTiR weighs 1220kgs, so we'd assume that the iR would weigh about 1050kg stripped.
Then again, if the mk1 is AWD it probably weighs a fair bit more than standard anyway!

I've read anywhere from 800-900kg's, but that's what I was getting at...the GTiR is already at a massive weight disadvantage. That said, the SR20DET can pump out some fairly decent power to compensate a little.
When I started looking at mk1's, I was actually contemplating putting an SR20 of some description in there due to the low weight...Would definitely be able to shake up the SFWD time lists at the drags.

mk 2 (2 door) syncro with a worked 20VT.
problem solved.
I have the full article from Golf+ on this car, insane piece of engineering. He actually had a Rallye with this gear in that had about 440hp and was doing 11's decided it wasn't quick enough so put it all in the mk1 and tuned it all more I like his style...
