Pulsar GTI-R is a car that comes to mind that would be a good base..... light, wide, AWD, huge engine bay, strong running gear (not that it would stay stock). RB26 in it and you'd be going pretty damn fast.... at a fraction of the cost.
Said like a true polo driver.

End of the day the GTI-R, as much as i like them, is still a nissan pulsar.

    For a Mk1 it's a mere 780kg - according to the original Instruction Manual.

Not sure where I said that. Please feel free to point out where I did. I said spending $120k on both (including cost of cars), the GTI-R would be quicker on track and in straight line. Where did $25k come from? A $25K GTI-R would get eaten by that mk1, I'll be the first to admit it.

Next time before having a dig, maybe have a good read.

    1. Talking about a GTI-R, how is that 'spoken like a true Polo driver?'

    2. With that sort of coin, the only thing that resembles a nissan 'pulsar' (actually a 'Sunny' which it was released as - it's was just considered and now commonly known as a Pulsar because of the similar N14 front end), is the shell. Same could be said for a lancer/evo, which would be quite an embarrassing comment to make. Anyhow, same again can be said for that mk1, and it's hardly still a VW Golf.

Very narrow minded comments here I must say. It seems to be VW or nothing for a lot of people, which is fine for a VW lover, but a true 'enthusiast' has an open mind to other/better options as well as their passion for a badge. Us 'Polo Drivers' get accused of being narrow minded thinking we have world beating Polo's that break the sound barrier (I was so close the other day too ), but I think this conception branches throughout this whole forum to those who don't like to think outside the box and are often ill informed.

Don't get me wrong, I love my dub and will be devastated to sell it, but if/when I get a track car, I wouldn't even consider anything in the VAG range. It will definitely be a jap import turbo AWD.

Either way, this all started from me making a passing comment about a GTI-R, I really didn't expect it to turn into this. This thread is about that nutcase mk1, I think it should head back in that direction before the heavy hands of the 'gods' close/edit this whole thread.

The manual for a MK1 says the 'Unladen weight (ready for road, full tank)' for a 1.6L 2-door is 780 kg. More for autos and 4-doors.

I would assume 'ready for road' means with engine, and 'unladen' means no people, no luggage inside?

Certainly is and huge credit to the guy for having faith in his beast and pumping that sort of coin into it.... no many would be game/rich enough to do it.

he's talking about a mk 2 Stephen, not a mk 1... which is why you've got diffo numbers.

POLO GTI, remember this is a vw forum, so we're going to be pretty one eyed most of the time, even if it doesn't make sense. don't take the comments too heart.

realistically, if most of us had a spare 120K, it wouldn't be going into a mk 1 or GTiR. Hell, i woudln't that's for sure.

D'oh Guess I should read Robin's post more closely! As the thread is about a Mk1, I just assumed. And so now we have the weights for both Mk1 and 2.

And I agree, if I had a spare $120K about $2-3k might go on the golf and the rest elsewhere.

    LOL

I am open minded but i dont go on a nissan forum and talk about how great a mk1 is and spewing all the stuff i know about vw's.

I dont see how its hardly still a Golf. The 4wd came from a golf and the motor came from a Golf......

I dont know about you polo drivers being closed minded, i think the problem is your to "open minded" and lack dublove.
I am open minded but im a VW enthusiast first and a car enthusiast second.
