i really don't understand why so many bag the R5, it has heaps of power relative to its rival 4 and 6 cylinder 4WD and goes well. I am sure i could get to 100km/h and stop again before my buddies patrol even got to 2nd gear I think the V10 and V6tdi are its downfall

When you have a writer who, as you say, says "golly gosh" you start to wonder....
Also when you have someone who doesn't listen enough to know how to start the car, and then gets a few basics wrong, you have to wonder how serious thay are about reviewing it. For example "There was no way to change the CD track or radio station via the steering wheel, which was slightly irritating." is just plain wrong. RTFM would be the polite way of responding to that. Also the criticism of the amount of "turbo lag". Sure there is a little, but not to the extent commented on in the review.
There has been much written about the "death lag" suffered by all Touaregs, and most of it is down to poor driving style. There is a cut-out that prevents the throttle opening wide if the foot brake is applied (as only a moron would want to go fast and stop at the same time!). This fools lots of Americans who have never had a manual and drive "left foot brake" in an auto. They tend to rev up and then lift the foot brake. A Touareg (and probably other VWs) will not let you do this. Maybe this is what the reviewer did, who can know?
Like Matthew says, the R5 is much under-rated. I have always liked the fact that if VW want to race a modified V10 in the Dakar, they use a fleet of R5s as the support vehicles. If they want to circumnavigate the world or climb to the highest altitude for any vehicle, they use an R5. The last Panamericana (Tip of Alaska to bottom of Argentina) record was calimed by a fleet of R5s burning biodiesel.
And it does it all at better than 10 l/100km.

EDIT I think its quite a good review actually there is not too many gripes, more positives IMO
