I remember seeing it for the first time back in the 80's. The owner was so proud about spending $20,000 to make it Australia's best MK1. Even back then it was way overdone and nobody else liked it.

He wasn't too happy to hear that he could have got a 5 speed gearbox for $300 instead of the $2000 his mechanic charged. Hate to think what else his mechanic ripped him off for.

Classic case of cheque book toy.

Some people think that lots of $s spent makes a great car. This one fails miserably. The original builder would have been better off spending his $ on lessons in taste. To think that this abortion has survived yet we lost a real mk1 GTI to the recent bushfires.

Assume the photos show its current condition, delete the wing, put standard front grill back on, de-yellow the interior, a set of 15 or 14" wheel. can turn it back to a nice Mk1. The sideskirt doesn't look too bad.
Problem is, who'd pay 10K for it right now.

    It's a 4 door with a 1.6 bored out to 1.8.

Not exactly rare no matter how much work has been done to it.
