Noob question: How come this magnetic plug can be re-used when the OEM plugs are replaced at every oil change?

You don't replace the plug, you (in theory) replace the crush washer. These come with 10 washers.

Is this the plug on the pan or on the filter housing?

For what it's worth, the plug is on the pan. And you should absolutely replace the filter every oil change.

Haha, yeah of course. I had thought that all the oil drains from the filter housing and that was the only plug. I then realised that most of the oil drains from the sump and that's the plug we're talking about

Ive got one of these ECS magnetic sump plugs on my R and also on the GTI - they are good. They come with a 10x pack of copper washers.

Yep, that's the one. I had one on my Bora when I had it, as did several friends.
