Good grief! I wish I could do it. I'd grab the three, fix the kerb rash and bide my time waiting for a fourth one to pop up.

    Yarg.

Now i am really confused... They look like Mk 4 rims...so when is a mk 4 rim a mk 5 rim, when the owner says it is?

yes they are mk4 wheels, so if they have a 5X112 std pattern they can't be genuine as stated. . .. can they .?

    Correct. Genuine ones were:
    MK4 VW OEM R32 wheels, 7.5 x 18, 5 x 100, ET 38

    Seller says they're the following:

    7.5Jx18. et38. 5x1248. Vw part# 1J0 601 025 BA

The part number certainly matches. The width and offset match as well, but the PCD's weird (I think perhaps he has that wrong).
