kias aren't all bad. Let me give you a super quick history lesson.

Kia started getting popular in the 90s. They built mazdas under licence and vaguely rebodied them. They were eventually successful enough that they dropped the mazda licence and started doing their own thang in the early 2000s. Your rio falls into this time period. It uses a proprietary engine that is heavily based on the mazda B series of engines, so much so that you can swap heads and other parts if you so desire. During this period of independance, kia purchased the rights to use the rover KV6 for their carnival/sedona people mover. This engine is a pile of ****s and is the reason kia got a really bad rep. After that debacle, hyundai bought kia and now kias are essentially just rebodied hyundais. So. Think of mazda quality in the 90s, then subtract a little bit. Think of hyundai quality in the last five years, then subtract a little bit. That is about where kia is in terms of build quality. Its not bad IMHO, you could do a lot worse.

Don't you dare TL;DR me, bitch. Its a pretty good deal, just make sure that the timing belt has been done, if not, haggle some more. Amerifags don't realise that cars are more expensive in australia, so this is actually not too bad when you consider the alternatives.

I brought my 2001 Bora for not much more than the Kia mate, food for thought.

Sorry for being a bit of a d*** but I just don't particularly like Kia's and asking that question on a VW forum... Let's just say I wouldn't expect the kind of answer you would like (unless you want to get told not to buy it at least)
